Honeymoon Discussions

All righty, I need ideas.

My FH & I have talked about a couple of different ideas, and can't quite agree. We've settled on something a little more "low-key" but not a beach trip. He's okay with spending a morning on a beach, but not really any more than that. We want something that gives us options to do things, but not feel obligated to do it if we don't want to.

We've talked about cruises as a possibility, but do you think that's a good option? Neither of us has been on a cruise before, so I'm not sure what to expect. If we did this route we'd try to "splurge" and get a bigger room with a balcony.

Any other ideas? We don't want to travel too far (we'll be flying out of Indiana). Too far, IMO, is being on a plane for more than about 8 hours. We don't have a set budget, but I'm thinking around $4,000.

  • I've been in the same boat as you guys!! We've had a hard time figuring out where to go. We've finally decided on Nova Scotia. It's a little different but we think it'll be great. If you're looking for a less touristy, off the beaten path kind of place this is it. As long as you don't want tropical weather... Our budget is less than yours and we'll be flying from ky. So it's definitely a doable option for your budget. Specifically, we'll be staying in Cape Breton. It does have a beach, but plenty of hiking and other outdoor activities. And if you're an animal lover theres plenty to see: moose, eagles, whales, foxes. Hope this helps a bit. Happy planning!!

We're going on a southern Caribbean cruise sailing 10/19...and I thought the price was great at $809/each for a week long vacation that hits up five ports.  We splurged and got a balcony, otherwise it would've been closer to $500/person...
  • Thanks for the ideas, ladies! Looks like FH & I are going to need to have a couple more Skype dates to figure this one out. Hopefully we'll get it figured out soon, though!
  • Check out vacationstogo.com - I learned about this website from CMGr, and it's really incredible.  They have a "90 day ticker" with all the cruises happening in the next 90 days at incredibly low prices.  Now for your honeymoon you might want to book a little earlier out than that, but prices really start to drop about 6 months out.  One of the cruises I've been eyeing that time of year departs from San Juan, PR and you get to go to the southern caribbean - islands that most cruises departing out of Miami and Ft. Lauderdale don't hit.  The flight is a little longer, but only by a couple hours and you can spend a day or two exploring San Juan as well.  Several ladies have honeymooned in PR and loved it.  The old forts, etc. are apparently still there, and I read that the old town in San Juan has a bit of a European/Spanish feel to it still.

Celebrity has a cruise out of there that is incredibly cheap - and Celebrity is one of the fancier, more upscale cruise lines.  This will likely be the next carribean cruise FI and I take.  The extra airfare isn't much more compared to Miami, and the balcony room is cheaper than most inside rooms on Miami/Ft. L cruises.  When all is said and done it costs about the same for us (a little less actually than your standard RC cruise), and we'd get to go to some places most cruises can't get to in 7 days.  Tripadvisor also says 2 or so days in San Juan is plenty to see the old town, and that's one of the places we'd like to visit.

  • You could easily due Ireland on $4K or less; we went this fall and it was the perfect time. I blogged about it if you're interested.

I love this website. I've been on 2 cruises and both were booked via vacationstogo.com. If you do a cruise, definitely splurge and get a balconey - one of my favorite things to do on the ship is find a quiet balcony and read.
  • FH had the same issue not really beach people, didn't have a destination we both were dying to go to and we are not super adventurious. We booked a 7 day cruise that goes to haiti, jamaica and mexico. This way we get the shows, casino and shopping and still get to do fun excursions. It was also very reasonably priced so we booked a large ocean view balcony without breaking the bank.
  • What about somewhere in Central America where you could combine beach days with sightseeing? Costa Rica, Believe, Panama, etc. You could easily visit that area for under $4,000.
  • We looked into Belize - sorry, I looked into Belize. He finally told me he doesn't really want a honeymoon with too much "structure" or "if you don't go right this minute, you'll miss out" kind of thing. Ireland was also an option - but we are already planning a trip there in the future.

So, looks like a cruise might be out of our options as well. I'm sure we'll come up with something - but thanks for all of your input!
