San Antonio

So we are going to San Antonio for our honeymoon in April. So excited. That's where my parents went on thier honeymoon, so it's kinda special. And although its not too far from home, I can hardly wait for Seaworld, Natural Bridge Cavers, San Antonio Zoo.... and of course the normal honeymoon activities. lol. But anyways. Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations as far as things to do or hotels that they like. Is anyone else going to be going to San Antonio for their honeymoon? I never see too many other people on here honeymooning in the states.

Re: San Antonio

  • I've been to San Antonio twice.  (For the NCAA basketball tournament and a conference.)  Both times I stayed in hotels that were on the Riverwalk.  I would recommend that area.  That seems to be where the most nightlife is at.
  • I definitely recommend staying along the Riverwalk, as the pp said. I was just there in February for business (my second time overall). Even though it was a bit chilly, I really enjoyed being able to walk around after a long day. I stayed at the Sheraton Gunter. It was a decent place, but not totally five stars. It's very old school with decor (the hotel dates back to the 1900s) and the rooms along the street were loud. So, if you want modern and quiet, I can't help you much there :)

  • I've only been to San Antonio for business, so I never got to choose my hotels.  Both were just close to my meetings, I think one was the Omni, the other was something SPG.

Ditto staying on Riverwalk or at least walking alongside it and getting a drink in the area.

  • FI and I LOVE going to San Antonio!  So romantic and so much fun!  We go usually once a year.

Like PP's said, definitely stay on the riverwalk.  There are a lot of nice hotels in a range of price ranges.  My favorite is the Westin, but that will be one of the pricier ones.  Other nice ones are the Hyatt, the Sheraton, and the Drury inn.  A little cheaper would be the Menger (historic hotel), the Crockett hotel, and the Emily Morgan.

All of these are in the center of the action.  They are all in short walking distance to the riverwalk, the alamo, the rivercenter mall, the rivercenter theater and imax, the Ripley's museum, the wax museum, and lots of clubs/restaurants.  There's also a river-taxi that will take you up and down the river all the way up to the San Antonio art museum.  It's great because you can do so much without using a car.

I'll be completely honest in saying that I found their zoo unimpressive.  But go for it if you're just dying to go to a zoo.  Seaworld, of course, is amazing, and the caverns.  The Witte museum is a cool museum too.

El Mercado is just a 5-10 minute drive from the riverwalk, and it is kind of like really nice flea market with all sorts of crafts and stuff.  It also has some restaurants, like La Margarita.  This is my favorite mexican restaurant in san antonio!  So delicious, and if the weather is nice, it has a nice patio to eat on.

Another good mexican restaurant is called Rosarios.  It's downtown, but maybe not quite walking distance from the riverwalk.  There are some nice restaurants on the riverwalk, but there's also some crappy ones.  I would definitely read some reviews before just picking one, unless it's a chain restaurant you already like.

There's also La Villita, a little community of shops along the riverwalk that has a bunch of crafts and hand-made items.

FI and I love visiting churches and missions in San Antonio.  In walking distance from the riverwalk is St. Joseph's, this very old german catholic church that is very small but gorgeous, and the San Fernando Cathedral where some of the alamo-fighters were buried.  The missions of San Antonio are kind of spread out along a trail, but if you want to see some history, they're cool to go drive to and find.

    Have fun!

  • Also, the San Antonio/hill country area has some nice spa hotels.  I've never stayed in any of them. but that's definitely the way to go if you want more relaxation and less noisy city.

  • I got engaged in San Anotonio last May! It was my first time there. It is such a cute place! We stayed at the Hyatt and loved it! Very nice hotel right on the riverwalk.
Some things we did were six flags, the tower in hemisfair park, the zoo (if you take the train at the zoo, get off at the japanese tea garden and walk around.. it was so pretty!), dave and busters, ripleys, the riverwalk, and of course, the alamo!
  • Thanks so much everyone! This gives me some good ideas on where to stay. I appreciate it. :)

  • I would highly recommend taking a horse drawn carriage ride around down town in the evening, My FI and I did that one time when we went down there (we have friends down there so we go all the time) and it was really awesome!
