is a map necessary on a reception direction card if the directions are very simple?

Hi ladies,
I've spent about three hours today trying to make a map that works for me.  I've used google maps, yahoo maps, mapquest, powerpoint, and photoshop.  I've googled ideas and followed directions.  Basically my problem is this:  map builders are always oriented due north.  In that case my route looks like a checkmark but when I zoom in to show a bit of detail, the start and the only turn disappear from the view frame.  If I could reorient it to north-northeast, I'd be fine --basically turn it so my check mark route is now an L shaped route.

My question is this, do I need a map if the directions from the cerermony to reception are literally this simple:
--Drive 9.2 miles and turn left.  Drive 2 miles and you're there!--  (obviously worded nicer)

  • Does it have to be a map?  Cant you just include a simple direction card that is all we did.
  • That's what I'm wondering.  Are clear written directions sufficient?
  • Yes I have actually only ever recieved one invitation with a map included all others only had written directions.

Nah, it's not necessary. Especially with two step directions haha :)

And for future reference you can make your own map using powerpoint or any design program that you prefer. I did it on powerpoint and it was pretty simple. Just copy a picture of a map, use it as a background, trace the line of your route and streets, add names and such, delete the map background picture and you're done! Doing it on powerpoint would also allow you to rotate the map in whatever direction you would like! :)
  • We have written directions. Only 2 turns though!

  • I don't think it is necessary. We didn't include a map, just the directions from points north and south.

  • I would just post the address for those people who use a GPS and then write out clear directions because they seem so easy.  If some people have a problem with it they can just look up a map themselves on the computer because they have the address or they can contact you if worst comes to worst.

  • If think directions are fine without a map. We did a map without directions and indicated that directions are listed on our wedding website.  I think one or the other is fine, both are not necessary.
  • Thanks everyone.  Nati, thank you for the directions, I could do that for the rehearsal dinner!
