first time flying

My fiance I will be flying for the first time this weekend for our honeymoon to Kauai. What are some things we should know? Where is the first place we go when we get to the airport? We are taking carry on luggage only, any suggestions what to pack besides clothes? We've got all our clothes packed already. We got our flights on Expedia, besides our vouchers we printed do we need to take anything else?

Re: first time flying

  • Be sure you don't have full size liquids in your carry on and that all liquid, gel, etc items have to fit in a plastic baggies (forget the size, check ther TSAs website).
Typically I check in when I first get to the airport and then head to security.
  • Since you are doing carry on only, make sure you do not pack any liquids (bigger then 3 ounces) or sharp objects (like scissors or straight edge blades for shaving)...these will be confiscated by security.

Are you planning on brining a laptop?  If so, you will need to remove the laptop from its case when you go through security so make sure that it is easy to get to.

Where easy to take off and put on shoes...you need to remove them and any metal (belts, jewelry, hair clips, change, wallets, phones, etc) before going through security.

Since this is your first time flying, I would suggest getting to the airport a good amount a head of time (about an hour and a half) this way you won't feel rushed to get to your terminal.

What airline are you flying on?  You can check in online ahead of time (24 hours prior to your flight) and can print out your boarding passes...this way you won't have to go up to the airline counter when you get to the airport, instead you can go straight to security.

Finally, remember your driver licenses and/or passport or birth certificate or something that will identify who you are and has the same name on it as what is listed on you plane ticket.

    Good luck and have fun!

  • 3.4oz OR LESS liquids need to be in containers marked with the volume.  You cannot bring a half full 7oz container. all liquids and gels need to be in a quart sized ziplock bag.

you CANNOT use your birth certificate as proof of identification. if your tickets are in your maiden name and domestic you need photo id showing your maiden name and photo. for international your passport. if you booked in married name but onl yhave maiden name id you have a problem and need to contact your airline immediately as the ticket name MUST match the ID name. marriage certs, birth cers etc.. are not acceptable.

you do NOT need tor emove jewelry when going through security. belts, shoes, coat, sweater, shoes, scarf all go in a bin.

  • http://www.ifly.com/ Check out this site it seems like it would be helpful and a bit easier to understand than the TSA's website.
  • Good suggestions from other posters. If you print out boarding passes ahead of time, you can proceed to the security line (by the way,, I am super impressed you are going to Hawaii and can carry on all your luggage! I'm jealous--I could never fit everything in!) Depending on what airport you're flying out of, you might be pulled aside for additional screening (the body scan or pat down. You'll need to decide which you're comfortable with. FWIW, I did the body scan and it was fine--I didn't mind it).

After security, you'll want to find your gate. We like to do this just so we know where to go and then usually we go grab food or magazines or what not for the flight. Also, if you're flying coach, most (all?) airlines do NOT have free food on board anymore. You can take pre-packaged food or beverages purchased at the airport on board your flight, but you can not bring bottles of water or anything from home. Since it'll probably be a long flight, I'd suggest doing this. Unless you fly first class, the food on board is expensive and not very good.

What to pack? We went to Oahu for our HM and I seriously lived in three things--swimsuit, cover up, and sundresses for night time. I'd also bring a sweater or cardigan as it gets chilly at night sometimes. For shoes, I did flip flops for the pool/beach and nicer sandals for sundresses, as well as one pair of wedges. Besides clothes, don't forget toiletries, birth control if you are on any, glasses/contacts, deoderant, sunscreen, aloe vera for if you get sunburned, SPF chapstick (my lips got SO burned in Hawaii!), and I always bring a small pair of scissors so I can remove tags from any new outfits I buy that I want to wear.

    Have fun!

Birth certificates are no longer allowed as valid id.  The best id is a driver's license issue by one of the United States.  Second best is a passport.
  • PPs covered most of the pertinent information!! :)

One thing I do to avoid getting dehydrated on airplanes (but still following the 3oz fluid rule set in place by TSA) is to carry an EMPTY waterbottle through security (I prefer Camelbacks as they are easy to stuff into my backpack), and fill them on the other side of the security gate prior to boarding the airplane!!  I do bring a little snack food through security (chocolate bar and fruit snacks that were pre-packaged) and have had no issues in the past!!

Also, I try not to wear any clothes that require a belt (if possible) and wear shoes that are easy to slip on/off so getting through security doesn't take forever!!  Airplanes/airports can be cold so I generally also bring a sweatshirt (sometimes I can wear it through security, but MOST of the time I stash it in my carry on until I am through security to save time)!!

Definitely get to the airport at least 1 - 1.5 hours in advance, and print your boarding pass and head to security (have your photo ID and boarding pass out and ready to go when going through security).  I always find my gate right away (to make sure there are no delays/time changes), THEN go find food (I try to eat a meal before flying, then just bring snack foods on my plane)!!  They do allow you to bring food from the airport onto the plane, so don't be afraid to buy food and not be able to eat it!

Since you are flying to Hawaii and have never flown before, I suggest purchasing dramamine as that long of a flight can make you sick even if you don't get seasick!!  I took it when I flew to Spain (roughly 8 hours, very similar to Hawaii flights).  There is directions on when to take it before flying!!

Each airline has different regulations for carry on sizes, so make sure you check those and measure your carry ons to ensure they are within regulations!!

Here are some websites I ALWAYS use when checking my flying information!!

I always bring gum when I fly too because of my ears popping. :-)

Little hint that might help. Otherwise the girls above have great advice!
