Honeymoon Discussions

Italy!!

So my fiancee and I have decided on Italy for our honeymoon- I am so excited!!!!  We are (probably) going to plan it ourselves.

Where do we absolutely HAVE to go?  Any recommendations for tours/day trips/hotels?

Thanks!! :-)

Re: Italy!!

  • I have spent a lot of time in Tuscany, so I will admit my bias up front.  Tuscany is beautiful and very romantic.

What sort of trip are you looking for?  Beach?  Active? Lazy?  When will you be there?

Siena is my absolute favorite city.  San Gimigano is an easy day trip from either Siena or Florence and is beautiful.  Montalcino is a neat day trip from Siena.  In some of the small hill cities, try a spontaneous picnic--visit the local bakery, butcher, and groceries, and grab some wine, salami, cheese, and fruit, and find a scenic spot to enjoy!
  • We are planning on going for 2 weeks in August.  We want to do a bunch of sight seeing, and I would definitely like to hit up a beach for a day or two.  We have looked into Tuscany so far and found a place we love, and I'm looking for some more ideas- maybe day trips?

  • We absolutely loved Capri (I'm partial to Capri since DH proposed there) and the Amalfi Coast.  Though we stayed in Sorrento, we would probably stay in Positano next time.  From Sorrento/Positano you can take a ferry to Naples or Capri.  You can also hire a guide to drive you around the Amalfi Coast.....so beautiful and romantic.
  • August is ferie, or vacation time, for Italians. Lots of restaurants will be closed, especially in smaller towns, so I suggest looking ahead and planning. The coast and beaches will be a lot of fun since many people will be on vacation there, so book your hotels early and be ready for a party :) August 16th is the Palio in Siena, quite a spectacle if you'd be interested in seeing the race that dates back to medieval times. Viareggio has a popular beach and is a daytrip from Florence. If I had two weeks for vacation in August, I'd spend a week in Florence taking day trips to Siena, Viareggio, Pisa, and maybe Lucca or Arezzo. Then I'd take a week and go south: Rome, and, either the Amalfi coast, if you're more into resorts and shopping along with the beach, or Palermo, if you are into museums along with the beach.

  • I might reconsider going in August. As lagiocanda said, that's when Italians take their vacation. Everything in the city is closed and everything at the beach is crowded and overpriced. Plus it is HOT. And most places in Italy do not have AC. I promise if you wait until September 1 you will enjoy it more and most likely pay less.
  • Thank you so much for your suggestions!!!

Annakb8- I wish that I could...but I am a teacher and am pretty much limited to those two weeks in August or waiting until next year, and even then it would have to be July.
I am so excited to begin my planning!
  • I can recommend Rome, although in August it will be really hot.

  • I have to agree with PP's about Rome. I lived in Roma for three years and August is when the city empties out of all the locals because it is boiling hot. Maybe do a more northern trip?
  • San Gimignano is a great day trip in Tuscany from either Florence or Siena.

Great Vineyard day trip from Florence--Castello del Trebbio
