Caribbean in August

Hello,

I am getting married at the end of July 2011 and we wanted to do a cruise to the Caribbean but after researching I found out that it's in the middle of hurricane season? Any opinions? Is it worth it to go or should we pick a different destination?

thanks

Re: Caribbean in August

  • I have done 5 Caribbean cruises, all of which have been in August during hurricane season.  I've always had gorgeous weather, and only 1 day out of all those cruises did we have rough seas.  I would never second guess going on another cruise during hurricane season either.  The cruise lines are always staying on top of the weather reports and the hurricane paths.  If there is even a chance of them running into a hurricane they will re-route your cruise and take you to other ports.  At the worst, they have to turn one of your port days into a day at sea, and as far as I know they compensate you somewhow for that.

So if your only worry is that it wouldn't be safe then I would absolutely book it and not worry about it.

  • Ditto pp's.. the first cruise I ever went on was in August to the Caribbean. We never even saw a drop of rain and it was beautiful the whole time. DH was on a cruise once where the captain re-routed the ship and they stopped at a different island and skipped one of the other islands on the itinerary to avoid bad weather. Being on a cruise is much better during hurricane season instead of going to a resort because the captain can re-route the ship, but if you're at a resort that's in the hurricane's path you're stuck there. When in doubt, always purchase trip insurance as well.. HTH!
