Capetown (NWR)

Hey All,

H and I are spending ~1 month in Southern Africa next July (2 weeks in Namibia, 2 weeks in South Africa) and we'll have a few days in Capetown. Can I get some sightseeing recs?  I've been to SA before but I spent my time in the east end of the country. Has anyone been to Table Mountain or Robben Island?  Also, does anyone have any spa recs? H and I always like to do a spa day when we travel and we're going to be volunteering and doing some hard labour while we're there so it would be nice to get in some R&R.  I really doubt we're going to be renting a car to any organized tours or public transit info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Capetown (NWR)

  • I was there in march which is during their summer. I had the most amazing time. Table mountain was so fun to climb but tiring. You can take a cable car up but I recommend hiking up.there are restaurants and shops at the top. Robben island was also great. I spent time at the beautiful beach. One thing I wish I did was go on a wine tour. I also wish I went cage diving w sharks. Long street is fun at night. There are some great restaurants by the water front. I was only there for a week spent a month and a half in johannesburg . If you've never been I recommend going on safari but im not sure how close the nearest is.
  • Also im not sure what the weather is like in july, my friend said it was pretty cold last night. Im sure you could still do everything you mentioned regardless of temperature.
  • July is a bit chilly in South Africa (it's their winter), but I think you'll still have a great time :)
We went this past March and had a wonderful time. I posted trip report on my blog: http://darcela.blogspot.com/2012/04/exploring-cape-town.html
We did Robben Island, Table Mountain, Hop on/off bus, winelands (Franschhoek) - I recommend spending a couple days there.

We went to a Spa in Franschhoek and the spa was just so so and was a bit older so I wouldn't recommend it. However, if you are in Cape Town, you can look at the following spa: One & Only, 15 on Orange (modern), Twelve Apsotle hotel.
  • I went to Cape Town four years ago for a work trip and had the most AMAZING time.  Unfortunately, we couldn't get to the top of Table Mountain b/c it was too windy which was a bummer. I did take a tour of the peninsula and saw the Cape of Good Hope, Chapman's Peak Drive, Cape Point and the penguins at Boulder's Beach.  The tour was breathtaking and my favorite part was the penguins.

There are so many great restaurants in the area (I will have to look through my travel logs to see what I really enjoyed).  The V&A Waterfront has a bunch.  That is a fun place to check out though it is very touristy. Lots of shops and restaurants.  http://www.waterfront.co.za
I ate there a few times with my travel mate but I preferred being in the heart of the city.

    I agree with joklein7 . I wish I did a wine tour too.

Have a wonderful trip!! I'm super envious, as I really want to get back there.  Enjoy.
