Affordable honeymoon

Hi Ladies!  My fi and I are planning our honeymoon and are looking to spend $1,500 - $2,000 on travel, hotel and meals.  Our wedding is August 25th, 2012, but we want to leave September 2, or that week.

We are considering a 7 day Caribbean Cruise with ports of call in Cozumel, Mexico; Belize; Mahogany Bay, Isla Roatan; and Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.  Can anyone recommend any excursions in those locations?

We are also considering an AI if we can find one in our price range.  Fi doesn't want to travel to Mexico, but is open to the DR and Jamacia.

Anyone have any good sites or resorts to recommend?

Thanks!

Re: Affordable honeymoon

  • I have not been on a cruise, but many ladies here have, so I'm sure some of them can speak about that.

My MOH HMed at a Couples Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica and they absolutely loved it. Not sure what it cost them, but there's one to check into since you mentioned Jamaica. Overall, I feel the Sandals resorts are overpriced, and there are many other wonderful AIs to choose from for less money.

You might also check with a travel agent (free to you) who may have package deals that aren't online.

  • In Grand Cayman I would highly recommend going to Stingray City.  It's a sandbar where you can feed and interact with stingrays.

  • I've been on that cruise and had a fantastic time!

In Grand Cayman went to Sting Ray City (paired with snorkeling) and had a great time.  7 mile beach is beautiful too.

In Belize we went to Altun Ha ruins, it was an hour drive, but there weren't many beach options at that port, so I think it is a goo choice.

In Roatan and Cozumel the beach is very close and you could save a ton of money by walking or taking a cab.

In Roatan we went to a Private Island - Maya Key... It had amazing snorkeling!

  • Thanks for all of the great advice so far.

Wiscisbliss -- that information is extremely helpful!  I have been to Roatan, Belize and Cozumel before on a Norwegian cruise.  I went to Tabayana beach in Roatan, snorkeling in Belize, and just wandered around in Cozumel.  I wish I would have gotten to see more of Belize since snorkeling took up all of our time in port.  I found the city part of Cozumel to be very boring and touristy.  Maybe next time we will explore a beach or book an excursion.

Keep ideas or experiences coming please!  I would love to hear more stories about your experiences on this cruise or in these ports!
  • The most fun I have EVER had on a cruise was in Belize... we went cave tubing. The caves are beautiful, and it was so much fun!  It started with a hike and they gave us some history which was nice. We went through 3 long caves and saw waterfalls. THen at the end they took us for an authentic mexican dinner with unlimited alcohol. Let me know if you are interested I can find their company name.

  • Jessimb0587 -- I would love more information!  I know there are a couple of different cave tubing excursions -- some have gotten great reviews, other have received terrible reviews.  I went to Belize in January of 08 and went snorkeling.  It was incredible, but I would love to see it from a new angle other than underwater.
  • We just booked the same cruise for our November honeymoon (Carnival?).  I'm looking for excursion recommendations as well.

Jessimb0587, I'm also interested in hearing some more information on the cave tubing.

Has anyone done the zip-lining or canopy tours?

  • Ok, I found it :-) the website is cavetubing.bz   The owners name is Vitalino. If you look on their ratings on tripadvisor.com they have awesome ratings!

  • Thank you Jessimb0587!  This is fi's first introduction to cruising, so I want to have great recommendations to share.
  • I went to Cozumel and did an excursion to see the Myan ruins. It was great! I love all the history stuff. You take a boat and a bus ride to get there, but I thought it was worth it. I got some amazing pictures from that trip--not to mention the best margarita and quesidias I've ever had :)
  • Absolutely! I love cruising, but Fi has never been on a cruise before and he gets really bad motion sickness. I would love to do a cruise, but I'm terrified that he will be sick and miserable the whole time. I think maybe we will try a 3 night cruise sometime in the future just to see how he does. (i'm not ready to give up on him yet) LOL. I hope you guys have fun!
