Outdoor Weddings

Tent/No tents...

I'm getting married outdoors at my parents house in Virginia. Originally I wanted to get married outside with no tent whatsoever (and i would still like to) but my mom made me second guess myself because VA weather is always soo random... June is usually one of the best months for weather but you never know, it could be a rainy day and when it rains it usually rains the whole day or half the day here. What do you think about having the wedding and the reception under a big, tall tent with no walls? Has anyone else planned an outdoor wedding with no tent and then worried about the weather, or changed their choice?

Re: Tent/No tents...

  • We had a huge canopy tent with no walls (although we had the walls just in case...) and it was great even though it was a beautiful day.  People mingled outside and inside the tent and it was good peace of mind since it rained a lot where I got married this summer.  If you didn't have a tent, what would your plan B be?  What if you didn't have one and it poured...?
We're currently on a 15 month trip around the world!

  • I'm from Virginia too- where abouts are you? We're getting married at the very end of May and we're definitely going with a tent... we'll have sides available if the rain gets bad enough (but of course it wont rain haha), but otherwise we're keeping the walls down so it doesn't trap in heat.
  • we are in texas and getting married in october...which is always a hit or miss on the weather. I cant stand the thought of a tent so what i did is i have a church not too far from our backyard where we are having it that i have on standby in case of bad weather. my thoughts were, even if i have a tent, i run the risk of getting my dress dirty (and the rented tux for my 3 year old son that LOVES the mud) by even walking on the aisle runner to the tent, the tent doesnt cover everything. so i think having the back up just in case was the perfect idea.
  • Don't forget that a hot sun is not good for guests, so a very sunny day really would call for a tent too.  I would go with the tent with no sidewalls - but you would need those if it rains.  Rain doesn't just fall straight down - a very gentle breeze will blow it right in the tent.
  • I too am planning an outdoor wedding in Virginia. I originally wanted no tents, but my aunt "rained" on my parade, so to speak, and talked me into the tents. This was when our ceremony was going to be in May. Now we have  changed to October, but I still want to have my wedding outside. I worry that, with our weird weather here, it may be too cold or even snowing.
