Outdoor Weddings

Are paper plates okay?

Please don't think i'm trying to be cheap! I'm not! We're just trying to figure out less hassle. Our wedding is outdoors in the mid afternoon. We are also having hor' dourves instead of main course meals. There will be an open bar also. Would paper plates be okay or should we go with the fine china? i'm just worried that nice plates will break with it being outside. Any ideas?

Re: Are paper plates okay?

  • How formal is the rest of your wedding?
  • You could always do those plastic small party plates. They are cheap, tossable, and not too formal or too informal.
  • I think it more or less depends on the formality of your wedding. But at my brother's wedding, which was more formal, they had really nice black plastic plates for their wedding. So I say do what fits your budget. Honestly, I don't anyone will really care all that much and they definitely won't remember what you had =)
  • Please don't do paper. Paper is too flexible and if you have anything with a sauce or juice (think bruschetta) then it will go right through the plate. I would go with the clear plastic plates. They're inexpensive (in relation to china) and you can find them in bulk like Costco or Sams.

  • Ditto pp. The clear plastic ones look nice, and they won't leak or break like the paper ones. They're also relatively cheap if you can buy them in bulk.
  • We have plastic plates that LOOK like china...oh I wish I could find pics for them, but they're ivory with silver around the edges....and plasticware that looks like actual silverware, but it's not breakable and can be thrown away after. My caterer offers them for 47 cents a plate or something..so it's affordable, easy clean up and it looked better than the plane white china they offered.Though as a guest I could care less if someone fed me off a paper plate :P
  • Yeah, we're using disposable china too! At first I was insistent that we use real china but then I thought about the hassle of clean up and stuff. The disposable stuff is just as nice. We have a large family and use it at Thanksgiving even. Usually around the holidays you can find it at Costco for pretty cheap.
  • I think fyrelle74 was talking about the comet masterpiece premium plastic china. Google it and you will come up with a number of picture. Happy Wedding!
  • Oh yes I agree.  I'm having a small, outdoor wedding next September and we are planning on using the clear plastic ones.  Though you may not be having a full dinner, keep in mind that people will be chatting and nibbiling and you don't want the paper ones to break apart!!
  • PP-I didn't even think about that! agh! that would be horrible! I think i'm gonna go with the clear plastic ones. We're just having finger foods and it's fairly informal. didn't even think about the blades leaking through though!
  • I'm using the clear plastic ones. they're a harder plastic, like acrylic. we used them for my sister's wedding and they looked and held up great, and they were still disposable.
