What looks best?

Okay, so I'm having an outdoor wedding in a garden terrace and then the reception is at the same location, but inside this beautifully refurbished old textile mill.  Here is my dilemma: My dress is ivory and very vintage-y feeling.  I plan on wearing a bird cage veil and a 20's inspired hair-do.  I originally wanted my bridesmaids in yellow dresses and we would all carry purple flowers.  My FMI doesn't like the idea of yellow dresses because of my dress being ivory.  She suggests black.  We are getting married in July around 4:30...black is not appropriate (in my book) for an outdoor wedding during that time.  Any suggestions?  In other words, should I blow my FMI off or what other color palettes would you suggest?

I want to add that I want to stay withe vintage-y feel.  It is very much a part of who I am so I'm trying to stay away from more modern color palettes.Thanks!

I myself would tell my FMI thank you and that you will think about it then... If that is what you want do it. Its your wedding and should be your style I like the idea of the yellow and purple and don't see anything wrong with the ivory. I also think that black is appropriate in a July outdoor wedding I just don't like it for a vintage wedding.

I'd just tell her that black is a little modern for the feel that you're going for. What type of yellow? This could make a big difference. What is your FIs opinion?

I think yellow would look great as long as it's a pale yellow and not too bright for your vintage theme. It's your wedding and you should have what you want not what FMI wants. I might be a little bias though bc my fav. color is yellow

I've seen black at just the kind of wedding you are having and it looked great, but I can understand it if you don't want it. I think yellow will be just fine. None of her business. Tell her some expert reccommended it. Tell her you called Martha Stewart and gave you the ok...jk.

Thank you so much for your help!  We are going bridesmaid dress shopping on Thurs. (my mom is in town from NY!) and we are goign to try on the yellow dresses.  (pale yellow) I have also seen a lot of weddings lately wearing a navy or marine blue.  I am going to try those on as well.  I really appreciate your help!

I think yellow would be fine.  Just not extremely pale.  Maybe something with a pattern. If you love yellow and purple and want them as colors in your wedding, do it! If you don't like how the yellow looks once you see it, then you can worry about changing colors. You can even change to purple dresses and yellow flowers if you end up wanting darker dresses.So far when someone gives me an idea I don't want to use, I thank them for the great idea. Then leave it at that. Later if they ask about what I did I say it was a really hard choice because I loved everyones idea's, but that such and such really caught my eye

All I am going to say is: it's your wedding :)If you see the girls wearing yellow - then let them wear yellow. Don't be afraid to be the boss! It's your day and if you feel uncomfortable with putting the girls in black on a hot summer night... then keep with the yellow palette. Your FMI will get over it - you're the one who has to sleep with your decision at night and will have to look at the pictures for years to come. Follow your heart and your dream

What about grey dresses as an alternative to black? You can even add yellow and/or purple sashes.
 I agree with the other posters that a) yellow should work just great as long as you pick the right shade, and b) you're the bride so go for what you like! )
