To Tent or Not To Tent...

We are getting married outdoors on the evening of June 2nd.  Our weather here is unpredictable... just last week, it was upper 50s, now it's in the 20s.  For the KY derby (1st Sat in May), one year it could be 80 and sunny, the next year it could be snowing. All of this to bring you into my dilemma... Should I take a chance on Mother Nature's goodness? Or should I book a tent just-in-case?

I called around about a tent and any funds paid would be non-refundable. 1/2 money is due to reserve, the rest is due 2 weeks before the wedding. I don't want to spend that much un-budgeted $$ if we don't need to... But I would hate to have to move everything inside the reception hall if it rains.

I'm torn! Help ladies!

Re: To Tent or Not To Tent...

  • Book a tent.  When you plan an outdoor wedding you should always have a plan B

  • Book a tent. Without one I think you'll be pretty concerned about keeping your guests dry. Personally, I don't concider a tent to be a sufficient plan B. But that's based on my local weather.
  • Our weather isn't unpredictable in July, and it rained on our wedding day - the first time it had rained on July 16 in 20 years. And it was almost an entire month's worth of rain in one day. We hadn't rented a tent. It caused a lot of last minute scrambling and unnecessary tension. And although it was dry by the time the ceremony started, it was still a lot of worry I hadn't needed.

Rent a tent or have a suitable Plan B.
  • I also second that a tent is not a Plan B. When it rains the water will not directly be falling on your guests, but the ground will get mushy and it often gets colder. If I was at a tented reception and it started raining, I would leave your gift/card and make a run for my car and go home to an indoor location where I was dry.

We are having on outdoor un-tented reception weather permitting, with a barn as the inclement weather back up option. Equally as nice, and no mushy ground.

  • Is it not possible to decide on renting a tent until a few days before the wedding? Then you can at least see the weather forecast. If not, you should get the tent.
