Fans for outdoor wedding

Need to make hand fans for our outdoor ceremony.  Where do you find colored cardstock that is affordable?.... I am open to other suggestions also.  Our wedding is the middle of July in Texas !!!  So it is Hot Hot ,,, having a late evening ceremony but still worried about the heat factor.  We will be having an inside reception but it is still open to the wooded area and the river that flows around the area.

I too am getting married in July out here in W. TX!! I bought my program fans at Michaels, and all you have to do is run them through the printer and assemble them (minor assembly). They're a definite must for us since it will be a million degrees outside by then! We will also have bottled water in a huge, icy tub which we ordered personalized labels for. GL!!
  • IWow, never thought about Michaels for that .  Did you find them in the wedding section of the store?..... Did you happen to get the water bottle label there also?.... Thanks so much for the info!!!!

Yes, I found them next to the invitations. They came in a box of about 40 and are elegant but not too pricy! Here's the link to the ones we bought:

ETA: Oh and I got the water bottle labels online at Oriental Trading:

We will just be getting 1 or 2 of those large galvanized steel buckets from Home Depot (and filling it with lots of ice) and putting the water bottles in them!
  • I completely understand! I'm getting married in July in Florida! And the ceremony is at 5:00... I wish I could have made it later but were having our reception there too and we have to have everything cleaned up by midnight.. So i'm doing the fans too!

  • We are having our wedding in early August but thankfully I just live in IN...still making our own program fans and will have bottled water. I tried to make our own water bottle labels but since they are just paper, it didn't turn out like I wanted. I think I will save the money and buy just regular water...Good Luck!

I'd suggest you buy raffia or palm fans.  That's what we did for our wedding.  Guests loved them and had a usable favor to take with them (we did not adorn them in any way).  Why take on such a time-consuming DIY project when you can purchase these relatively cheaply?

  • Have you thought about renting large fans from a local rental company? I live in DFW and it is HOT in July, even in the evening. having cold water available is a great idea. Best of luck on your weddding day.
  • I am getting married in Texas next week and we made "book fans" for our wedding. We went and got an inexpensive book from an antique store (not a classic novel that I would feel bad cutting up) for like $3. We cut out all of the pages into squares and just glued two pieces together with a craft popsicle stick in-between the pages. We tied a ribbon around the stick to dress it up a little. They turned out really cute and actually work really well. We made around 200 fans and it didn't cost more than $15 or $20.
  • I hit the clearance section of our large local scrapbooking store. I lucked up and found card stock in one of our colors for $0.10 each for 12x12 sheets. I found the fan sticks at Michael's really cheaply. I designed a program for each side of the fan and just hot glued them together. I made 100 fans for less than $15.
