Outdoor Weddings

DJ, Lawn Games ,or Both

Frist off i am sorry if your seeing this post again i realized i posted this in the reception ideas page but was looking more for advice from people that do like the lawn game idea at a wedding but may say that my wedding may not need it (if thats your opition) not that lawn games dont belong at a wedding. I appreciate all options even ones that are not how i feel. THANK YOU EVERYONE THAT ANSWERS. with that said......

Ok so i am in a real pickle. I am having a garden wedding/reception and am only having about 50 guests. Both our familys are not dancers and are more low key which is going to be about half the guests so we planned on just doing 3 or 4 lawn games and have an ipod playing in the background. BUT i dont have anyone to do the MCs job and my sister is telling me that the lawn games are a bad idea. i know about 10 of my guest would be all in to dancing and everyone else would just be a bonus. There is a concrete slab that they use as a dance floor (really pretty) so i would not have to rent that. so i was thinking of doing both DJ and lawn games. BUT then i think my wedding is two small and i dont want it to look deserted. what do you guys think. hire DJ/MC and not have games, Have lawn games and just find some one to MC, or hire DJ/MC and have lawn games

ps: the wedding is all during the day. we have to be gone by sunset so it not going to be an all night party. 1pm ceramoney, 2pm dinner, 5pm cake, gone by 6pm

  • I feel that the lawn games fit the overall feel of your wedding moreso than a DJ.

If you want to play lawn games, just have them out and available for your guests.  Don't try to "organize" anything with it, your guest are more than capable of entertaining themselves if they wish to participate.

  • I agree with PP. With the music you could put an iPod out and just have it in the background. Not really needed as a focal point.

  • You know your guest best but if they aren't into dancing like you said and it's an outdoor lawn wedding. I think the lawn games sound perfect. Maybe make signs for them so people know theres games but they don't have to play them!
  • I think lawn games fit! Do you have am important older relative- dad, mom, FI's dad or mom- anyone helping you pay- an uncle? aunt? grandparent?  that could help act as MC?? I know my dad is going to make a couple of announcements throughout the night to help with the flow of things. Also- your officiant could possibly help act as sort of MC if they will be there. With such a small wedding though, you could almost rely of  a few key people to help spread things through the party by word of mouth.
  • We used a computer for our DJ. People did dance, but a lot didn't. We had croquet, hula hoops, bubbles, and bocce ball out on the lawn. People didn't really play the games, but the hula hoops saw a lot of action. But, I think if you don't have a dance floor or that isn't the focal point, and some people start playing the games, others will follow.
  • I was thinking of games also! I don't see anything wrong with it and I think it will keep people from being bored. Even those who don't like to play like to watch! If you have music and a concrete slab some people might just go ahead and dance on their own :)
  • THANKS!!! I think thats what ill do. it will save us alot and i will just have to find a loud mouth in the family to tell people when it is time for dinner and cake cutting lol! Thanks guys this is what i was thinking but just needed some positive feed back :)
  • I love the idea of lawn games- now we're thinking about doing that, too!  Any knotties have more ideas as to what kind of games?
