Help! Backyard Wedding?!

Help!  My fiance and I have started planning things backwards.  We picked our honeymoon and moved our date, and then we decided that we would pretty much wait on everything else to see what our finances are like.  We have several possible places, but due to budget, we may in up in the backyard of our new house.

We have picked Friday, November 2nd as our wedding date.  We were thinking of doing the ceremony around 7pm, but looking at the calendar, sunset is normally around 6:10... So I think the ceremony may be moved up to 4pm.  Most of those invited work at jobs that are very flexible with hours, so I do not see that being a problem.  If it is, then oh well, they don't have to come.

If we end up in the backyard, I will be getting a tent for just in case of rain, because I was originally completely against having an outdoor wedding because I am scared of rain.  Should we look in to getting heaters for the tent as well?

I am really hoping that we can find a venue that will be within what is left of our budget after getting our house, but worst case scenario, I am looking for ideas!  Thanks!

Re: Help! Backyard Wedding?!

  • Look on the bright side: what you were going to spend to spruce up and decorate any venue will now be spent on creating the perfect backyard for your house! :)
  • Try some unusual venues for budget friendly ideas.  My fiance and I are getting married at the local planetarium and it was sooo much less expensive than a ballroom.  We are using a local resteraunt to cater and driving to Delaware to buy the alcohol tax free. Local museuems, fire houses, even greenhouses with an open area may be interested in making some extra money by renting their space.  Also, non-profits will not charge you tax on your rental.  I'm sure whatever you choose to do will be beautiful.

  • Love the look of a backyard wedding done right. So pretty. If you can do it in your yard for cheaper than renting a venue, I say go for it and make the most of it.

We're having our ceremony and cocktail hour in our backyard. It was not my 1st choice but faced with other options, it was the wisest and most cost effective choice. I have a few details to iron out to make it work but for the most part, I'm happy. If it rains, we will move the ceremony to the cocktail area (our rancho bbq area that is covered). I do hope it does not rain though.

Also, think about parking. Do you have enough for all the cars. parking will be tight here for sure but everyone will be leaving around the same time so people being boxed in shoulnd't be too much of an issue.

  • I'd just make sure that your guests all know it will be in the backyard and to dress for the weather.  I specifically told our guests that I cared more about them being comfortable than fancy dress.
