Mosquitoes?

We are getting married in just over a month in northern WI, outside, next to a lake. Has anyone come up with good mosquito ideas other than citronella candles?

Re: Mosquitoes?

  • I'm not sure what you should do it you do not want to try the citronella candles. Just please do not ask you guests to wear bug spray. I have been to a wedding that a couple bought bug spray and left it out on some tables you had to walk by before the ceremony. It was rediculas we all smelled funny. (I have a bad reaction to mosquitoes ) the bugs were so bad there that the bug spray didn't help much.

  • I believe Bounce fabric softener sheets repel mosquitoes (but it's been a while since I've lived around mosquitoes so you might want to test it out).  Also they have those clip on bug repellers that you can set out on tables and make a little "safe space".

  • the off lanterns perhaps

  • If it's an OOT wedding, what about putting some nicer scented bug spray in the OOT bags. Off skintastic smooth and dry doesn't smell to bad. And putting it in the OOT bags is a little more discreet than out at the ceremony.
  • Call a pest control company to treat the site the morning of the wedding for mosquitoes.  It will cost some money, but would be worth it..
I'll lay it out and admit that I work for a pest control company.
  • thanks for the ideas ladies! I was thinking about putting the off skintastic smooth and dry in the OOT bags, but there are way too many people to make that affordable (we invited 475 people, so far, about 240 are yes's, we have a ton more calls to make). Does anyone know how to use the dryer sheets? Otherwise, we were thinking of leaving some cans of off smooth and dry out. I would love to put them in the OOT bags, but I think it would add up to fast to let everyone have their own. How long does fogging last? We have a lot of people with allergies, will that matter?

  • Have someone use a fogger a few hours before hand,, worked for us!

  • Do a professional mosquito fogging the morning of, it will be wearing off enough that allergies shouldn't be a problem.  Keep in mind also, that many people are allergic to mosquitoes.  Also, they carry disease, so the suffering with mosquitoes would likely me worse that a few hours in a little pesticide.
I recommend professional treatment because honestly do you want to risk overdoing pesticide if you family member using a DIY over uses the chemical?

Not everyone does OOT bags- you don't have to and it's not expected.

And WGAF if it's discreet. Mosquitos aren't, and why would anyone have to be discreet about putting repellant on.

OP- get a cute bucket and fill it with different repellants.  There are nicer scents of OFF and Avon Skin-So-Soft also has nicer smelling ones.  Make a sign of barn wood that says something like "Don't Bug Us" (I'm not good at cutesy wordings)   Place the bucket somewhere near the entrance so people can see it and use it as they walk in.  Otherwise, send out a note or call people to warn them of the mosquitos and they can make the decision on their own.

  • I would spray a few days before.  We have a cabin in alaska and the mosquitos are horrible. We use Raid in the blue can it works GREAT!! and it lasts!

  • I live in WI too and am swarmed by mosquitos at our house where the wedding will be. So far we bought Cutter, that you can hook up to the hose and do. I will also want to fog the place though the morning of because we live by swampy area Ie mosquito breeding ground. Let me know what you decide and how much it cost to buy. That is my next to do.
