Aisle runner alternatives

We are getting married in my parents' backyard. The aisle will not be straight, but will have to curve to a degree as the arbor is not directly in front of the doors we will be coming through. I originally thought we would be fine to not have a defined aisle and I'm not worried about sinking heels being an issue (all flats and wedges!) versus fabric being a major trip hazard. Then I found THE dress... It has a train, and I don't really want to drag it all over the grass :( What are some 'not too expensive' ideas I can present to my parents?

Re: Aisle runner alternatives

  • How about freeze dried flower petals? much less expensive than real ones and they're dry so you don't run the risk of staining your dress. If you google it you'll find tons of sites that sell them. Good luck, sounds like a beautiful setting for your big day! Smile
  • I wouldn't worry about the grass, it will only be bad if it rains just before. Also Aisle runners outside can cause tripping. I agree maybe flowers will be the best bet?

  • Oooh! I had not come across freeze dried petals - that sounds like a wonderful idea! FI's idea was putting in some paving stones as a yard upgrade for my Dad... But I still don't feel in love with that idea. And I think I have to worry about staining without rain - my Dad's the type to decide he should mow the day before ;) Thank you for such a great alternative!

  • I went to a wedding where the runner was a strip of carpet. They said it was very inexpensive.
  • Petals are expensive and a wreck to clean up.

Your dress wont get grass stains.  And if it happened to get a couple, your dry cleaner will get them out  IMO, aisle runners outside are ridiculous.

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • My mom and I found an article where a couple used wallpaper - ordered a few yards and then cut it to fit their venue!

  • Jenni, try luminaries, they come in many styles and colors, use flameless candles and it brings a nice romantic touch. Good luck.
  • I wouldn't worry about the grass.  Our actual aisle was concrete, but we did pictures all over the grass and I didn't have any stains (we had our venue not water that day).  Generally, your train is light enough that just gliding over the grass won't get any grass stains, just be extra careful that no one step on your dress while you are on grass.

For defining the aisle though, petals are a great way of doing that.  We actually bought bulk roses from Costco and used half of them for our centerpieces, and the other half, my IL's pulled the petals off of the morning of our wedding and we just lined the aisle with them (kept a handful out for the flower girl to sprinkle on the aisle) and I absolutely loved the look.

  • You could use petals or colored rocks.... or even gems as long as you don't wear heels...
