Choosing a Mountain Wedding Venue - Help!

Hi there,

I've narrowed my wedding venue to two sites.  Both are ski areas in Northern Utah.  I've made a list of Pros and Cons for both of them, and it seems that where one area is lacking, the other achieves, rendering decision-making quite difficult.  The first one is an area with beautful long-distance views, sentimental value (where my fiancé and I skiied as little kids) and lodges with gorgeous interior (thus less need for decorations), however, the nearest lodging is a set of multiple-bedroom condos a ten-minute drive down the mountain.  Beyond that, it's at least a 30-minute canyon drive into the city for other hotel options.

The second option offers less in terms of spectacular views and interior decor (the inside of the reception hall is almost industrial-looking: made to host skiers in boots, obviously), and it has less sentimental meaning to us, but they have on-site condos (sleeping up to 14 for families) AS WELL AS an inn which rents rooms like a hotel.

The dilemma: with so many guests coming from out of town (guest list is almost 250, although I'm guessing only about 50% will attend), lodging is a pretty big issue.  The condo-thing would be difficult because arranging guests into houses with other guests would be more troublesome than letting everyone rent their own room - not to mention how to split the condo rental between people!  However, I'm having a hard time committing to the somewhat less-pretty place because it doesn't have a special place in my heart.

Advice?  Please and thanks :)

  • I'm sold on your first option... it sounds so lovely!

If you're worrying about guests having to drive a long distance, you could get a shuttle or bus to transport them up and down the mountain from the hotels on the day of.  Its an extra expense, but could be well worth it to use the venue your heart is set on.

Our venue is 50 minutes away from the nearest town with hotels, and we're just going to pile everyone into a school bus to get there!  That way you don't have to worry about people having one too many at the reception and crashing on their way back home...

  • I would go with the first venue.  The tone of your description alone tells me which you should do.  Utah can make travel difficult, my venue is 20 min. from good places  to stay.  Try to get a shuttle.  The right venue makes a huge difference.
