Has anyone had a fireworks display at their reception?

Better yet, has anyone done this in Michigan?  Any thoughts, comments, ideas would be so greatly appreciated!

Muchas gracias!

  • My reception is in Michigan and I love the idea of it, but we're having ours at a golf course so I don't know how they would feel about that.  I would think at most other places that would be fine though so long as it wasn't too near any wooded areas.  Sounds quite pretty!

  • Personally, unless your budget is enormous, I would skip this.  To have enough fireworks to make a reasonable display, they are pretty expensive.  On top of that, you would have to hire a professional to coordinate all of this which will make it even more expensive.  Please don't have drunk uncle Joe take care of this as that could be a huge mistake!

Fireworks are just one of those things that we all see at least once every year.  They're common.  I just don't think your guests will appreciate this as much as you might be anticipating.

I think most of your guests would prefer better/more food and alcohol.  If food/alcohol are already stellar, I would take a nicer honeymoon or something like that.  Just my 2 cents.

  • We want to do fireworks at our wedding. We plan on going to the indian reservation during the 4th of July to get a deal. We'll buy our fireworks for the 4th and for the wedding at one time so we get a really good deal. I also know someone who runs a stand so they'll hook it up even more. My family is full of pyros including myself so I figure I'll set out an overall plan of how I'd like it to go and just let em have at it. I'll probably put one of my cousins that doesn't drink in charge just to make sure it's not a fiasco. There's also a beach below where my wedding will be that will make for a perfect area for them to bit lit off. I can guarantee I'll be down there too having my go at it. Gotta love those fireworks!

But FYI I've heard a wedding planner on one of those wedding shows say something about always telling people NOT to have fireworks because there always ends up being a fire. So, if you don't have a big open space you might want to skip it. I'd make sure the firework display is far away from guests and any tenting etc...
  • Oh and depending on the area you might be required to get a permit (or it might not be allowed at all) and with a permit you may be required to have professionals do it. I'd check with the city you're having the wedding in just to see what the rules and restrictions are.
  • Fireworks are illegal everywhere I've ever lived, so definitely check the laws in your area.

  • I live in Michigan, and unless it's the 4th of july, or the 3rd or 5th, I would DEFINATELY look into getting a permit. The fines will probably cost more than your fireworks did...
  • We are actually considering car pooling everyone to the local fireworks after the wedding!  Of course this only works if you are getting married around July 4th ;)  Our wedding will be a casual BBQ at home with 50 or so close friends, those who want to go can go to the fireworks, I am sure some will stay back at the house.
