We had a beach wedding and our "dance floor" was the sand.  It was really fun.

I was to two weddings at the same outdoor location, one rented a dance floor that was very uneven, and lumpy even though the ground was flat. It was slippery to begin with then someone spilled a little of their drink and people actually fell. The other didn't rent a dance floor and there were no problems with it. I would just maybe spread the word that they will be ont he grass so they think twice about those spike stilettos.

we're having an outside ceremony, and the reception immediately following--- all on the grass.  we didn't rent a dance floor either, so we'll just be dancing on the grass as well.  I just made a note on my wedding website about it, so people know ahead of time.

My reception location luckily has a little brick patio that is perfect for dancing, but I'd say you are probably fine.
