Beach Wedding and Reception

We are thinking of getting married in Hawaii.  FI wants the reception right next to the ceremony - in the sand.  I want to go inside to a reception hall.  Can't image being in that sand for any longer than the ceremony.  But, I want to make him happy.  What do you think?

Re: Beach Wedding and Reception

  • Well ultimately it's up to both of you. Hawaii (we went to Oahu for our HM-loved it!) is pretty mild year-round, like in July we had 80 degrees everyday. Once the sun goes down it gets a little chilly. So I don't think you'd get overheated being outside the whole time.

Could you compromise? The hotel we stayed at-the Sheraton Waikiki-had an outside huge patio area where they hold weddings/receptions. We saw one happen while we were there. It was right next to a pool and overlooked the ocean. You'd be off the sand but still outside by the water. Guests were able to go for strolls on the beach or go inside, of course, if they wanted.

  • Our reception was on the sand.  Granted, our reception was not a typical one.  We only had 12 guests and we had a four course, sit down meal, on the sand next to the water.

All the guests took off their shoes.  I think we were out there for maybe three hours eating, drinking, and talking.  I wasn't bothered by the sand one bit, but if this is going to be your standard reception (dancing, mingling, walking to the bar), it might be a bit much to be on the sand the whole time.  Is there a place right off the sand that could work?
  • This was in the news yesterday.  The state of Hawaii is/can (not sure which) charging a fee for commercial weddings on the beach.  Here is the link to yesterday's article.  I don't know if this will add much to the cost of your reception but thought you would like to read it.

"In 2008, the state began requiring permits for commercial weddings. The permit fee is 10 cents per square foot of requested beach area, with a minimum of $20 per event. Liability insurance is also required, which can vary based on the type of wedding people want and the companies they hire."

  • WOW!  Thanks so much for your responses.  We were just talking with a wedding planner and she said the same thing about the beach weddings costing and that had my FI back off the idea!  Funny Summer2011Bride you mentioned the Sheraton, we just had looked at that property.  I saw they have a site specific honeymoon registry, not a generic one, funds go to the hotel.  Have any of you used a honeymoon registry?

    Thanks!

  • I just got married at honualai on the big island of Hawaii and it was perfect. The wedding was right on the ocean but on the grass the reception around the pool with the view of the ocean. This way sand was not an issue.
