music for reception

hi i am doing a 1950s inspired wedding in september, under a tent. i want a quirky fun vibe. its in the afternoon, and we are serving all american comfort food...mac n cheese, hot dogs, hamburgers etc.
we are into indie music and i like oldies, too.
so i've researched 1950s music, nat king cole, sam cooke, bubblegum type music...
would it be weird to do a mix of both types of music? or just stick to 1950s stuff?
of course all the songs have good messages about love :)

thanks!

Re: music for reception

  • I think mixing it up is a great idea, especially if you plan on having dancing.  If you play only oldies from the 1950's, younger people may not dance as much if they don't know the music.  And if your favorite music is indie, you should definitely incorporate some of that, with songs that are meaningful to you, not just chosen to fit a theme.

  • I agree completely with pp. Music is important so play some oldies if you like them but try to show your theme in other areas than music. On a another note is you play music during dinner this may be a good time to play the golden oldies
  • I'm incorporating some oldies into my music, too, but I'm placing it during times when no one really dances anyway!  Example--cocktail hour music, bouquet toss, garter toss, cake cutting, wedding party entrance, etc!

Of course, you can certainly still find some great oldies that everyone can dance to.  Good luck!

  • whew ok thanks, ladies. i thought it was cool when i came up w the idea of mixing genres then i secondguessed myself and thought it might be confusing lol.
i got some ideas for indie songs to play from an article on the knot actually.
i think we will do the oldies more during dinner...its going to be mostly an older crowd (family members who grew up in that era) so i think they will get a kick out of it!
thanks again and i will def post an idea of the playlist when i have it !

  • Mix it up, for sure.

We're having music from multiple centuries ... heck, not just a couple of decades from the last century!  Prelude music will be from 1600s and 1700s.  During the cocktail hour, we'll likely have a jazz vibe with a mellow saxophonist playing something from the 1940s - 1980s.  Dancing tunes for the reception, courtesy of a DJ, will range from 50s Nat King Cole and Sam Cooke; to 60s Temptations, Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye; 70s Eagles and Elton John; through the 80s and 90s into this century, with Michael Buble.

We absolutely love all kinds of music and can't wait to have a taste of it all on our wedding day.  Hmmm ... looking at the playlists, maybe we're not as much retro/vintage as eclectic.   LOL!

    Congratulations and good luck!
