Name Change and Airline Ticket

I just found out yesterday that when my husband booked our honeymoon, he booked the flight in my married name instead of my maiden name.  The problem is, the name change process is taking much longer than expected, and I won't have an ID with my married name on it by the time we leave at the end of December.  We called the airline and tried to change the name on the ticket, but they won't do that once the ticket has been purchased.  If we want to change the name, we have to cancel the flight and rebook it, and at this point it would cost us a ton more money for that option.  The customer service rep said that if we bring a copy of the marriage license to get through security, we should be fine.  I just wanted to see if anyone else had found themselves in a similar situation and if bringing the marriage license was sufficient.  Thanks for your help!

Re: Name Change and Airline Ticket

  • I agree with CS.  Bring both your current ID with maiden name and your marriage certificate and I'd think you'll be okay
  • Are you travelling outside of the country?   That might be an issue if you are.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Nope we're going to Vegas, thank goodness.
  • when are you getting married?

  • here's the TSA list of approved IDs. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/acceptable_documents.shtm
marriage certs aren't acceptable. they probably will make you go through a ton of extra security if they accept it.
is there any way that you can rush a new ID after you get married before HM?

  • We are already married, have been for a couple of months.  Still waiting on new social security ID, and my commute to my job limits my ability to get to the DMV to Saturdays only.  Long story short, I'm running out of Saturdays and I have no idea when my new card will get here.  Admittedly, if I had known that the flight was booked in my married name, I would have pushed the process a little harder.  I'll probably call the airport directly to see about it.  We also just might need to bite the bullet and pay the extra money to cancel and rebook the flight.
  • I just got off the phone with TSA, and wanted to pass along what they told me. They will take a secondary form of ID, but they do not have a set list of what those secondary forms have to be, so it can be virtually anything.  Basically, if I present the marriage license with my maiden name ID as well as anything with my married name on it, like a utilities bill or other piece of mail, I should be okay.  They may ask me to fill out an ID verification form at the security checkpoint, so we'll just get to the airport plenty early in case.  Thanks for all of your help though!
  • Have you checked with the DMV if you actually need your SS card?  I didn't, I only had to wait 48 hours after changing my name with SS for it to update in the system.

I went to the SS office last Tuesday, and then the DMV last Friday (with my certified copy of my marriage certificate) and had no issues.

    yes, this is true.^
  • Just bring your marriage certificate.  I booked some (domestic) travel under my married name before my new driver's license showed up, and no one said boo about the names not matching.  They understand that sometimes it takes a while for the legal name change to go through but sometimes the young couple gets excited and books travel under the woman's married name prematurely.
  • Yup, that's kind of the gist I've been getting from everyone I've talked to.  Thanks for all of your reassurances and help.  I feel a lot better about this.
  • I changed my DL in Chicago without having gone to SS - all I needed was the marriage certificate.

<div>This is true in many other places as well. I would bet everywhere. It didn't used to be that way, but DMVs can connect to the SSA online now.</div>

  • I don't know about your state but here (Michigan) you don't need your SSID to get a new Driver's License.  That's the easiest one to change.  I'm sure it's worth taking 10 minutes during your lunch to call your DMV to ask, at least.

Ditto this. When I applied for my new driver's license, I presented the marriage certificate and receipt from the SS office that I had applied for a new SS card.

Same here.. in NJ you don't need your SSID to change your name at the DMV. Just bring your Marriage certificate to the DMV with you to change it and you can avoid any worries at the airport. Just call your local DMV and ask them, or check their website (Even easier).
  • I feel completely stupid now.  I went on the Virginia website, and yes, all that I need is my marriage certificate.  Thanks for pointing me in that direction everyone.  I guess I was confused because when I moved to the area before I was married, I had to have just about any ID I could get my hands on in order to get the new license.  Problem solved!
