Hotels in San Juan

I've posted here before about PR, but it's been a bit.

We're going to PR for our honeymoon.  I've already researched hotels in the other cities we're staying in, but I'm still working on San Juan.

Does anyone have any non-chain recommendations?   We don't want to stay at a Marriot, Intercontinental, etc. No big chains.  We're looking for a guesthouse, B&B, or boutique type of accommodations.

Any suggestions??

Re: Hotels in San Juan

  • Look at the reviews on TripAdvisor.

  • Ditto tripadvisor.

Just wanted to add that most of the good beachfront property in San Juan is occupied by major chain hotels, just in case that was something you wanted as well.  If it is, I'd suggest maybe looking for B&Bs in Fajardo, or even on Vieques or Culebra.

  • Thanks ladies.  I've been reading reviews on TripAdvisor, but having worked at a hotel I've learned that most people only post reviews when they have a bad experience.  I thought I might get some different opinions over here.

We are staying in Vieques for 3 nights and San Juan for 3 nights before we go on our cruise to Barbados & the Virgin Islands.  Beach front isn't necessary- just close enough to walk or take a short bus ride :)

    Thanks for your feedback girls!!

That's not really true of TripAdvisor.  I've used TripAdvisor for pretty much all travel for the last few years, and I actually find their reviews to be very, very accurate.  Sure, there are a few reviews that are clearly from stupid whiners, but you can usually tell those apart from the legitimate reviews.  Also, I look at the mix of reviews - if a resort has over 500 reviews and only 20ish of them are in the Poor/Terrible categories, I take that as a sign that the resort is probably a good place to stay.

  • Maybe this is a little closer to what you are looking for?

I have not stayed there but we were considering it the last time we went.

  • i've stayed at the water club and it's gorgeous.

  • I do not think the ElConvento has a pool but it is a cool looking hotel. DO you want Old San Juan or Isle Verde?
