Retro and Vintage Weddings

A cowboy/western/pioneer wedding.

I'm wearing cowboy boots under my dress, I'm really excited about that.

I'm wondering if anyone else out there is doing a cowboy wedding, or if anyone has suggestions for decorations.

We'll be doing the centerpeices with flowers wound around barbed wire, horseshoes and any other farm relics we can get our hands on.

I'm also thinking about spray painting some plastic children's toys copper, thinks like bucking broncos and such, does anyone have a suggestion as to wear i might find stuff along those lines on the internet?

If anyone has a great idea for any part of the ceremony or reception I'd love to hear it.

  • Wow, it sounds like small town antique stores will be your best friend! When I was a kid my brother's room was decorated like that-- he had an old lantern with a bandana tied on. That might look really good at your reception.

I agree, you will probably find your best centrepiece ideas at a fleemarket or antique store!  What is your venue like?  Lots of other rustic/country brides go for the haybale seating as well.  Is that something you could do?

Also, the ever-popular burlap table runners are always a hit!

  • those are great ideas!  we we're already gonna go w/ haybales for the cermony seating, but I'd been wondering about the grandma and grandpas, we have an antique couch ( a little more shabby than chic ... lol) but it's green like our colors I'll just have someone haul it out there it will be pretty! burlaps a good idea too. thanks!

It sounds like you already have a really strong vision of how you want your centerpieces to look.  Of course, that won't stop me from throwing out some additional suggestions for things to incorporate in your decorating!  (FEEL FREE TO IGNORE EVERYTHING!!!)

-- If you go to ebay, type in "enamel pitcher" and also "enamel coffee pot" (They'd be nice for flowers; if you don't want to use them as centerpieces, perhaps they could be used elsewhere.)

-- Also, instead of spraying toys bronze, it might be easier (and not much more expensive) for you to simply go to ebay, type in "bronze toy horse" as well as "copper bronze horse" and just buy actual, vintage Western collectibles.

-- Yet another ebay suggestion: you might want to search for "flour sack" (the vintage kind) and throw a few of them over a few bales of hay, for people to sit on.

-- Years ago, in a magazine, I saw a photo of western boots used as vases; just put a cheap, cylinder-shaped glass vase inside the boots then add water and flowers.  Could place these near where you stand to get married or near the bales of hay or entrance to your ceremony site.

-- Like graysquirrel, I thought of bandanas, too.  (The Western, paisley kind.)  If you don't know what I mean, look at the lengthy link below.  This place sells them for $8/dozen.  Could be used under your centerpieces, or as napkins, or given to guests as their thanks-for-coming gift:

-- Buy vintage Western sheet music.  I don't know where or how you might be able to use this (perhaps copy and shrink it down and use it to identify your guest tables?), but the vintage photos of cowboy singers like Gene Autry and Roy Rogers are really cool!

-- Get one of those big, metal basins (the kind you picture when you think of bobbing for apples) and fill it with ice and use it to hold cold sodas (in glass bottles) or beer or whatever.

Lastly, this won't help you with decorating, but if you want to see a photo of an actual Western (or possibly mid-western) wedding group from the late 1800s/early 1900s, I posted one at:

That's all I can think of for now.  If you have swap meets nearby, you might be able to find things to inspire you there.  Good luck, and keep us posted!

  • use the net and tap in western wedding images, themes, ideas u should get some ideas.
  • Flea markets are the best place to steal a deal and find unique centerpieces! Mason jars would also look great.
