Birdcage Veil DIY 1st Attempt

OK so I went out and bought 2 kinds of tulle and a headband today.
Found a diagram online and set to work.
I sewed almost completely along the cut edges of the tulle and pulled it so the fabric gathered. It really shapes the veil nicely when you gather it.
Then I sewed it to the headband. Here are some pics of my 1st try. I'm pretty pleased actually....I have never been especially good at  sewing lol

its longer than the veil I tried on last week, but I like it.

I bought a pretty white gardenia on etsy today: I will prob just glue it on top of the tulle.
Now I just need to decide if I should use the tulle or get some netting, I like the wider openings in netting and its more retro to me.
Anyone else doing birdcage veils DIY style? Suggestions or opinions?
Thanks!

Re: Birdcage Veil DIY 1st Attempt

  • i think it is very cute in tulle. I actually did the same thing and tried to make a veil out of tulle first to find out if i really wanted one or not. Turns out tulle is sooooo much easier to work with than the netting or at least it was to me. I finished my birdcage (its in my bio) but I am still not that happy with it.

  • hey i love your veil (and your site is sooo fun too!)
i'm so conflicted....i  have very fine hair so the headband with a flower and veil attached is easier bc it stays in...
but i like the idea of a veil attached to the comb that i can take out after the ceremony
i will prob stick with the tulle, i have heard before that the netting is tough to work with and i like the tulle with little sparkles in it that i got today :)

  • Oh I like it! I really like the shape and material.   What if you put it back a little bit more on your head?  So it came a teeny bit higher on your chin, but hit more in the middle of your head at the back?  I don't know why, but for some reason I keep wanting to nudge it up and back just a little.  What do you think?
  • I agree with pp.  I just want to pull it back a bit further on your crown.

    Beautiful though!  (yours too, alyssa!)

  • Wow, that turned out great!   I love the shape and the sparkles in the tulle.  I was too afraid to make my own veil, but now I kind of wish I had given it a try.

  • ya i would like it further back too. its the headband, much further back would feel odd and i dont think it  would look right.
now that i have the idea of how to sew it, i am going to try and get a comb or barrette and try sewing the veil to that.
if the veil is on a comb, i have more versatility about how to position it and where.

should I attach the flower to the comb, too?
the flower i ordered on etsy comes on a clip already, so i could just wear it separately

i'm also conflicted on whether or not to keep the veil on during the reception, just flipped back?

what are you guys doing? keeping the veil on or taking it off?

    ah! so many decisions!!!

  • oooo a mantilla is so pretty! at first i was considering doing a really simple dress and a more elaborate kind of veil like that. you will have to post pics, i'd love to see yours.
i am def going to target today to get a comb or clip to sew the veil to.
one of my bm's is a hairstylist so shes doing my hair for the wedding, and she said its not a problem to make the veil stay in my hair with the comb...she mentioned alot of hairspray and teasing.
i think i will def keep the flower separately, so i can remove the veil during the reception.
i'm also looking at pillbox hats, so thats an option too.
    so many decisions lol
