vintage picnic reception

I am trying to have a vintage old fashioned picnic reception. Colors are purple and grey. I already know I can't afford purple gingham tablecloths, and to make it a thow back to old neighborhood block parties, and spending summers by the pool, and just going and hanging out which we really don't do as a community anymore, all I can think of is croquette, horseshoes, and hard candy sticks.  Maybe some watermelon.  My flowers are picasso calla lilies

my dress is tea length

I am not going totally vintage on the wedding...just the reception.  I want it to be casual, want people to have fun, sit back, and relax (literally~I might have picnic blankets and everything)
What are your thoughts?

Re: vintage picnic reception

  • i think that would be so different and awesome! you may be able to find those table cloths at goodwill or if you have a friend or family member that sews-you may want to look into what the fabric would cost--

but i think that is such a lovely idea!

  • That sounds amazing! I would love to go to a reception like that.

Ditto on looking into how much the fabric would cost. Are you having long wooden tables? Because then you could just make long table runners with the fabric, and you wouldn't need to buy as much!

  • JoAnn fabrics has purple gingham for pretty cheap (a thin cotton fabric- in the quilting/notions area)

fabrics.com has it too! great prices there

I definitely suggest paper fans (how fun is it to lounge and fan yourself? LOL love it) and lots of grapes-  your guests will think they're being oh so pampered without actually having to pamper them ahaha (the power of suggestion... love it)

  • Thanks everyone.  Hey Hippie, I love your name!
  • Okay, I got my grandmothers gown yesterday from 1958, and it looks remarkably similar to mine (which I am going to chop up for a guarter and hankie for both me and my 13 year old cousin).  I think with my gown, I might be going a little more vintage-esk than I thought for the wedding!  I will look at Joanns, honestly I have mostly looked online to this point.  This is funny because in Portland we have a lot of what my fiance calls hippies and calls vintage a buzz word along with things like organic...and it drives him nuts.  I guess am planning more of a vintage affair behind his back than I ever expected!  lol.
