San Francisco Honeymoon

Hello! Me and my Fiancee are heading to Cali for our honeymoon. We are flying into SF and then renting a car and driving around wherever we want to for the week. Anyone have any suggestions on nice fair priced hotels that are somewhat close to the airport? We plan on staying in a nice room for the first night and then doing the whole cheap chain hotel thing for the rest of the trip.

Re: San Francisco Honeymoon

  • Ditto PP on prices. Also, be aware that SFO airport is NOT in the city. Easy enough to take BART into the city from SFO, but I just want to warn you in case staying inside San Francisco was part of your plan. Now, if you are wanting to save some money, staying further south on the Peninsula can help with that. Look into hotels in Millbrae, Daly City, San Bruno. Of the three, I'd say Millbrae has the best chance of feeling "romantic" for a honeymoon. All should be somewhat cheaper than anything within San Francisco city limits.
  • We stayed at the Parc 55 which is right by the bottom of the hill where the trolley does a turn around. It is walking distance to San Francisco Pier, shopping. We actually walked uphill to Ghirardelli Square/Fisherman's Wharf because the trolley was always so busy.

Parc 55 is nice, clean, I didn't think it was outrageously expensive. We stayed on the Club Level, which allows access into their Club Lounge.........free breakfast in the morning, appetizers in the evening, and desserts later in the evening. Saved us some money on food. I just checked your bio and see you are getting married in June.......not sure if you are going then or not, but the Club Level rooms are about $300 then. Sorry-we went in September 2011.

Unless you are thinking of driving into the Napa or Sonoma Valley for a wine country experience, you may want to rethink the car rental. We got to the hotel from the airport by van (you can also catch the BART trains) and didn't rent our car for the rest of our trip until we were leaving San Fran. In addition to the cost of the car rental, you are going to pay $25-$50 per night to have the hotel put your car in the garage..........it's crazy. If you want the car to go into the wine country, I'd plan all your local San Fran sight seeing for the first few days, then maybe rent your car later (we got ours from Hertz, walking distance from the Parc 55) and use it for your trips outside San Francisco.

I agree 100% with www.tripadvisor.com. I made multiple hotel room reservations by using that for our trip last year........you can look for places in a particular price range, and by customer rating.

    Good luck.

  • We are going to SF for a week in July.  Like the PP said, renting a car for the week is not advisable.  We are going to rent one for a day to drive to Napa but that's it.  Our best man is going with us and he is staying in a budget hotel for $73/night but it has a twin bed and no AC or windows.

[QUOTE]We are going to SF for part of our anniversary trip to california this July. However, we are not staying near the airport, but rather in Union square. As far as convenience, someplace in Union Square would be closer to all the attractions. Like PP said, all of SF is quite pricey. You might be able to get good deals on hotels besides near the airport on Hotwire or Travelocity, etc.

Union Square actually isn't very close to a lot of attractions.  I guess it depends on what you want.  It's close to Chinatown and shopping.  But if you're thinking the Fisherman's Wharf/piers/waterfront, the bridges, Ghirardelli Square, etc, it's not close at all.

Yeah, you're going to pay a hefty parking fee if you have a car.  And driving in town is a NIGHTMARE.  Taking a cab to and from the airport and taking busses, cabs, cable cars, and walking will save you a lot of money and hassle.

thanks everyone. i guess i didn't do a good job explaining...our plan is to stay in SF one night, maybe two and see a few things and then drive either north or south (still undecided) and stay where we end up at the end of the day. basically a cali road trip type thing. After reading your comments i am SO glad we aren't staying all week in SF!
