Payments??

We are getting ready to book our honeymoon, I've noticed that a couple of sites let you do a "layaway" type payments for your vacation. Which works really great for us, rather than putting it on a credit card. I've noticed apple vacations and cheap Caribbean does this, does anyone else know of websites that offer this?? I want to make sure I am getting the best rates available.

Re: Payments??

  • My FI and I used a local travel consultant who booked us through sandals. We had a set down payment which we knew in advance, so we didn't book until we had the money. Now we're booked and we have 3 months to pay the balance, we can pay a little at a time or the balance at once.
  • If you book through a travel agent, it is typically like PP described. When you actually book the trip, you pay a deposit (usually 50%) and then the rest is due about a month or two before the vacation.

All the sites like Travelocity, etc., I believe you need to pay in full up front in order to book the trip.

  • Agree with PPs. With most travel agents you are required to put down a deposit, which is a small portion of the land costs (like $300), usually the full amount of the airfare, and the cost of the trip insurance, if you purchase it. I just booked a trip to the Cook Islands and my deposit was $600 plus my airfare. Then, the balance is typicallydue 45 days prior to departure. I'm getting ready to send in my final payment tomorrow :)

This is similar to how we did it.

OP, we booked our honeymoon to Europe through European Destinations. Most other vacations I have been on I paid seperately or all at once. Even when we went to Mexico we booked it about 1 month in advance and paid it all in it's entirety. Most websites do have options to pay the deposit and then portions up until your honeymoon. I believe the balance is usually 30-60 days before you leave. Some websites do have this option, others don't. It just kind of depends on where you want to go and what you can afford. But it would be a good idea to have at least 60-75% for a downpayment.

    Ours worked out to be:
    Total Package Price: $4,580.59 USD
    Total Payment Received: $2,764.00 USD
    Total Balance Due: $1,816.59 USD

  • Costco travel allows this also.  If you have a costco membership or a friend who does, I highly recommend their travel site.  We booked our honeymoon through them and it was easy and they allow deposits and payments to be made.
