Ok, so FI's brother's wife is absolutely evil to me. She, along with FI's other brother's baby mama (haha) got us a trashcan for our shower gift.  We spent over $200 on each of their showers (bridal and baby), and I totally know that they were trying to be brats by getting us this gift.

Knowing that, is it totally wrong to write this in the thank you note:

"Thank you so much for your shower gift, we'll think of you everytime we use it."

haha i've been debating this for the past hour and would love some opinions

I love the idea. Even though it may cause some tension, I think its a nice way of a F*ck you.

I think I would write it on a card just to feel better... but then tear up the card and send them a normal one.

I wouldn't want to make the situation worse... but at least you know you will think of them every time you use it.

(But then I probably end up doing something like this.  If they are ever over at your house with a bunch of other people and someone else is using the trash can, I would very loudly - in a sappingly sweet voice - comment on how it was a gift from  so and so.  I would be embarassed if everyone knew I gave a trash can as a gift.)

I would totally do it...if anybody asks it was a general thing you put on some thank you when you really didnt have the words to say...hey it wouldnt be so bad if it was pots and pans or towel set right?

haha i'd want to so bad but as my fi and i always say that you don't just marry each other, you marry the family as well (particularly if your FI is close to their family). i'd let karma work it's magic. but hey i don't like confrontation but if you do it you'll have to keep us posted on the reactions

wouldnt it feel great if we could always just speak our minds!? i would totally want to do it, but wouldnt.
It would just give them something more to talk about and you'll give them the satisfaction of them knowing it bothered you.-cause why else would you make an indirect snarky comment like that.

if you act like it didnt bother you and pretend like you love it they will feel no satisfaction and have nothing to talk about.

I dont see anything wrong with it! If you can write a card and say " oh so and so I absolutely in love with my china, everytime I use I will think of you" then why not write that? I would go a step further and regift it but that is just me....Did you register for the trash can?

I would probably say it out loud A LOT, but I am too polite to write something like that to someone.  I hate drama, and that may feed it.

I'd do it - for her to complain about it would require her to admit she got you a trashcan, and that that there is a negative connotation behind it which I can't imagine shed want to do. It's also so general that there is no proof how you meant it (except now on the knot). I know people say you're marrying the fam and this is true but I'd want to push back just a little so they maybe wouldn't be rude in the future and think you'll turn the other cheek. Maybe isn't the best advice but it's honest for me

Id do it but thats coming from someone who wanted to ask her SIL to leave the wedding cause she was being such a biiitccch! She didnt get us anything for a wedding gift and I bring it up often...I sent her a blank thank you card...there was nothing to thank her for so why waste my time writing something?

I love this idea so much that I wish someone who I really wasn't very fond of would give me a trashcan!!! LOL Plus isn't the proper way to write a thank you card? 0:-)

LOL I would love it if you did that!  But it would probably create drama within the family, not sure if you'd be up for that.  Did you ask for the trashcan on your registry?  If not, then that is so not cool of them..
