Wedding Attire Question

The groomsman will be wearing tuxs and the the BM will be wearing black long dresses.....to me this says Black Tie.

But there is a part of me that feels bad putting BLACK TIE on the invitation and making men go rent tuxs.  I know its my day, and I shouldn't care....but there is a piece of me that does....

If I put black tie optional would it look silly if half the men are in tuxs and half are not?

I'm clueless and confused....thoughts are all over the place and I have yet to do any productive work at all today.

no, it def. won't look weird if some men are in tuxes and some are in suit...I have black tie optional on my invites...so people know not to wear jeans! lol

I don't think black tie means that people have to go rent tux, they can wear their own suits. It is more like a term to let people know it is a formal affair.

Don't feel bad, now days people put that on the invitation and it is not a big deal or a bad etiquette thing to do. This is a new era where things are more acceptable

We put Black Tie on our invites hoping that most guys would wear tuxes, but its certainly not mandatory and we won't deny anyone wearing a suit. 

Same goes for ladies...these days some cocktail and tea length dresses are more than appropriate for black tie affairs.

If you want most of your guests to wear tuxes put black tie, but if you don't care as much, put black tie optional.

Also, if the GM are in tuxes and BM in black dresses and you put black tie optional its ok bc they are supposed to stand out.

I agree Ive seen the Black tire on invites before and most people just take it as to dress formal...suits or tux.

good Question! I am going to put black tie optional.. just so men wear a jacket. ( i don't know when wearing a jacket became an option).

Can I just put "Formal Attire"? Or should it just be Black Tie Optional?

Formal Attire means any suit.  I'm putting Black Tie optional because that way people now it's really formal.  I don't care if men don't wear a tux, but I do want them in a formal dark suit, at least... I definitely don't want just a jacket or even a light colored suit (which is acceptable under formal attire but not under black tie optional) HTH

We are doing Black Tie Optional.  I actually forgot to put it on the invites themselves, but it is on our website.  

In addition, people are supposed to know by the time of day that the wedding is occurring.

I put black tie optional on my invites  b/c like Jess said I dont want ppl showing up in jeans or like they are going to the beach.

Ahhh good question hun! You must have read my mind because I swear I had the EXACT same thoughts. I think the girls answered it really well...and I too am doing black tie optional so people know it's a very formal event
