what do do when you are two different vacationers?`

Me: Beach girl through and through. Lazy vacationer. Sun, a book, and water, is allllll I need. And wine. And vodka.

Him: HATES beach. Hates to "sit" Likes sporty things.

What we have already thought of and discarded (flying out from Baltimore)

1) Flying to Vegas for a few days (I've never been, he has) then renting a car and drving down the CA coast (beach for me!), stopping in Napa, and then going to San Diego (we like zoos) and flying home from there. That was too expensive and we'd lose a lot of time driving.

2) Mediterranian Cruise. I was excited originally but he's scared to go to Greece and after I thought about it, that's way too far from home. We have a daighter who will be 22 months when we get married and I just can't be on a ship that far away from her.

3) The Florida Keys - Staying on Key West to soak in their party atmosphere and then Key hopping for the beach one day, swimming with dolphins, maybe ziplining, etc. He kiboshed it because he just really wasn't into it.

4) A Carribean Cruise. He's liking the idea of a cruse because the ship will keep him busy. He wants to leave the country because he never has before.  I've been to the US Virgin Islands and some of the British ones and I love them. He's willing to go to the beach for a day if I do kayaking and ziplining one day. No problem..we can compormise. The problem with that is that most of them go through Mexico. He has zero interest in going to Mexico and I've been and didn't love it. All of the Virgin Island cruises are pretty long - 7 nights plus we'd have to fly to Miami. Baltimore does have a cruise port but they don't have Virgin Island cruises.

Now we're thinking of cruising to the Bahamas. we'd stil have to fly to Miami, but there are a few 4-5 day ones we're thinking about. I'm still not super jazzed though. I'd rather go to a place and stay, and I'm sort of bummed about the Keys.

  • I don't know your budget, but have you considered Hawaii? It's awesome for beach-bumming but you also have all the water sports and activities you could want.

    Vacation
  • You could choose an all inclusive in st Lucia or Jamaica. They both have zip lining , Jamaica has Dunns River Falls which is the most amazing thing to do ever. St Lucia has the volcanos and natural hot springs. You get the beach out of your front door every morning and he gets the activities. Most of these will have certain water sports included as well, we're going to Couples San Souci. These options would not be too far away from your daughter either (our twin girls just turned two).

What about a cruise to Bermuda?  They leave from Baltimore.  You're on the ship for a day or two (lots ot do for him, sitting by the pool for you!) to get there, then you're in port for a few days.

On the island, you can go to the zoo (they have one!), ride bicycles (not mopeds), see the beaches, go to the crystal caves, hang out in the capitol and eat, snorkeling/glass-bottom kayaking...  then it's two days home on the ship with lots of lounging and activities again.
  • What about Costa Rica or Belize? It's not so far- maybe a 4 hour flight. There's TONS of jungle type activities like ziplining, kayacking, treking, etc. and plenty of beaches for you.

  • I'm in the same position. I'm the beach bum and he wants to take surf lessons - uh, no. We're considering doing a 2 part trip in Costa Rica staying in the rainforest for half and then on the beach for the second half. We're also considering St. Lucia since it's like Costa Rica, but with nicer beaches and that caribbean feel.

Your fiance might get bored on the cruise since there aren't a lot of physical activities other than the slides by the pool and rock walls on Royal Caribbean. I'd Royal Caribbean if you do decide on a cruise only because they have more "fun" stuff to do as opposed to lounging in the sun.
  • you find a compromise-someplace that has stuff for him and you.

  • If you go to an all-inclusive, he can snorkel, learn to dive, do hobie cats or surfing, kayaking and so forth.  Something like Sandals, Couples, etc. that include watersports would be good. If you don't want to do all that, you could do the tame stuff like glass bottom boat.

I don't know your budget, but something casual and adventurous for a cruise is Sea Dream.  You don't have to dress up, and it's all-inclusive but goes to little places you might otherwise never get to.

We went to Greece last fall, and the people don't have a care in the world. It was fantastic and beautiful. I wouldn't be too afraid to go there. Just get insurance!

The Keys doesn't sound so great as some of the other things you are considering or have rejected, but whatever you decide, embrace it to the fullest and enjoy life and marriage! Best wishes!
  • A cruise sounds like it would work very well for you guys.  He'd always have something to do, and you could lounge all day if you wanted.  When you stop somewhere, you can take an island tour or plan to do an activity, not necessarily sit on a beach.  We left from Baltimore on a cruise a few years ago and visited the Bahamas, Turks & Caicos, and a private island.  My in-laws just left from Baltimore on a cruise to Bermuda.  If you aren't opposed to flying, the BEST cruise we ever went on left from San Juan and visited an island each day.  We were so busy and had so much fun that we felt like we needed another week off after it! lol
