Prospective Employers and Honeymoons?

I am job hunting right now, and we already booked our honeymoon where I would need to take off 13 days (actual work days) in November.  At what point should I tell a prospective employer about this?

Re: Prospective Employers and Honeymoons?

  • after the interview when they offer you the job and ask when you can start, you can say something along the lines of "immediately, but I am getting married and would not be able to work these days (insert wedding/honeymoon days).  I understand that they would be unpaid and I am fine with that."  I did this for my current job (but with vacay) and they were just happy that I could get training in before I left.  If they aren't okay with it, they'll let you know and you may or may not get the job, but at least it won't sneak up on them when November comes along.

Ditto pp's, don't mention anything until you have been offered the job. When I started my last job, DH and I had already had a trip to Cancun booked that was a month after I started. I just told my new boss that we had a trip that had already been planned and booked, which was fine, I had 2 options, to either go negative in my vacation time or to take un-paid time off. Usually, this isn't a problem as long as you're up front about it at the beginning (after you've been offered the job of course). Especially since it's for your wedding and honeymoon, I'm sure your new boss would be sympathetic.

Plus, November is still a ways off. After 6 months in, you'll be ready for a vacation, and if you're given say 2 weeks of vacation time a year, that should cover your honeymoon plus a few sick or personal days. Just save up your days to use towards your HM.
  • when you negotiate the offer
  • Exactly what summerkutie said! Good luck :)

  • I just started a new job and am getting married 11/4. When I received my offer letter, I sent an email with the dates that I need off (I have a few during the summer too) and asked if this would be a problem. I didnt mention anything about not getting paid and she said it was totally fine and I'm still getting paid!
