Mexico and Safety

Ok, so I think I already have made up my mind, but just wanted opinions...

We are thinking of going to Excellence Playa Mujeres for our HM in April 2011. When we mentioned this to my future FIL and MIL, they were very concerned (plus, they're paying as a wedding gift). I have done my research and feel 100% comfortable traveling to Mexico. Has anyone else recently been and felt safe?

It seems most of the troubles have been limited to the Mexico/US border and we really don't plan on leaving the resort. Thoughts?

Thanks girls :)

Re: Mexico and Safety

  • Oh geez.  Stick to your guns on this.
  • A friend of mine just got back from her honeymoon at that same resort a few weeks ago and she said she felt extremely safe the entire time. She booked transportation through the hotel to and from the airport, and she said the resort had 3 security checkpoints.

That said, we've decided not chance it and will not be honeymooning in Mexico.

  • We were just in Cabo in September and we felt extremely safe.  I'm sure that you'll be fine, but it's sort of tricky in this situation since your in-laws are paying.  If you can't convince them that it's safe (which it is) you'll have to either decline their offer to pay or choose a location that they're comfortable with.

  • Thanks ladies. I'm not really worried. FIL's will go along with whatever we are comfortable with.

  • I would say maybe going to a website like traveladvisor.com (that's my favorite!) or you can always use Google and read the reviews from that exact location then maybe share them with your family. Since they're paying for it it's a little tricky BUT if they're anything like my parents they worry about EVERYTHING!!!! Maybe showing them the (hopefully positive :)) reviews will help ease their worry!
  • and i actually meant TRIPADVISOR not travel :) sorry!!
  • Mexico is FINE! Stay away from the border towns, as mentioned, and you have nothing to worry about. Even in the cities (away from the resorts) all you have to worry about is someone convincing you to buy something and paying more than you should. I would recommend taking public buses over taxis, because the city officials will stick to schedule and not try to scam you.

Just be sure to drink bottled water!! :) GL!
  • I get so riled up when people think they can't go someplace because of news reports.  Well, how many of you have decided not to go to France because of all the strikes?  Or Italy because they now have "decency laws" that are aimed at immigrants and tourists alike?  What about the Carribean where any minute there could be a hurricane or an earthquake?  Sheesh.  People are not insulated from danger anywhere.  Best just to go out and live the life you want.
  • We were just there this past March (Cancun). It's perfectly safe.
  • I wouldn't think twice about going to Mexico. You will be perfectly safe as long as you don't venture through the border towns on your own.

I went there for my HM in feb. and felt VERY safe. Here is my review on my TA blog. It was amazing, and yes they have 3 points of security to get into the resort.

Enjoy it! We are probably going to The Excellence Rivera Maya in Feb. for our 1 year

  • we're going for the 8th december in a row this year.

why wouldn't you leave the resort?!? leave the resort. go to cancun and have a few nice dinners, do some shopping, explore the area on day trips.

  • I just got back from my HM in Mexico on 10/14.....We LOVED every minute of it. We felt extremely safe, leaving the airport (just go directly out of the airport to the transportation and do not stop because they will try to get you to go to a timeshare event....which they swear is not a timeshare event..not that it has anything to do with safety...just a tip Wink) We felt safe throughout our time there. I left my jewelry in the safe, we left our phones and expensive items in the room and nothing was touched. The staff where we stayed was amazing and it upsets me that because of bad things going on in other areas, they get a bad name for it....These people were extremely polite and accomodating, as well as helpful. My parents tried to say the same thing, but I didn't care.

  • Thanks Ladies :) I totally agree with all of you! I think the FIL just needed reassurance. This will be my 3rd time to Mexico and have never had a problem. I will show them this thread!

  • We just got back yesterday and it is very safe. We stayed at The Royal Playa Del Carmen, took American Express Shuttle to and from airport, and walked around 5th Ave in Playa and never felt unsafe at all. Go and have fun... if they are worried about safety just stay on site at the resort :)
  • I would go to Mexico! I've been several times myself.  My best friend & her hubby just went to an all inclusive there earlier this year, she said it was amazing!

I got really excited about a particular resort on Isla Mujeres...but unfortunately, my fiance's family is completely ridiculous and think that we're going to get shot in the middle of a Mexican drug sting.  And since my fiance's grandma is being completely amazing and picking up our lodging for our honeymoon through her timeshare...we kinda have to take it off the table since she is not on board.  The good news is, we found an few awesome options in the Dominican Republic and we're hoping to book one of those soon.
