HAWAII

Hey Ladies,

I need some advice.. whether you have been or have heard things I will take any input. We are going to Hawaii for our honeymoon, and FI and I are trying to decide which islands we should visit. We are definitely doing a week in Maui.. we are just trying to decide whether we should spend the other 4 days in Oahu/Honolulu orrrr go to Big Island. We thought about doing both, but it seemed crazy to spend less than 4 days on an island with so much to do! Thoughts?

TIA!

  • it depends on what you want.  Oahu is a lot more touristy and built up.  the Big Island is more low key.
  • I say the Big Island all the way. It's one of my favourites... plus: hello! Active volcano! Amazing stargazing tours up top an inactive volcano! The Big Island is awesome. For me, Oahu just feels overrun with tourists (though not so much the North Shore or Kailua). But, if you're big into nightlife, it's definitely got the best of all the islands.
  • We are going to Oahu because we wanted a place where we could lie on a beach or go out to a bar at night, so i think it has the best of both worlds. Maui should be gorgeous and a lot of fun too!

My FIL's went to the Big Island last year and had a great time, though as well. I don't think you can really go wrong; just depends what sort of stuff you want to do.

A website I found helpful was Hawaii's Tourism website (just Google Hawaii). You can click on each island and get info about it, they even give you sample itineraries for each island depending on the length of stay. You can choose things you want to do and it will tell you the best island for it, etc. That helped us make up our mind.

  • I definitely agree that you need at least 4 days on the island.  It really depends what you are wanting to do.  Oahu is good for a short amount of time if you really want to check out Pearl Harbor, Polynesian Cultural Center, Dole Plantation, Waikiki Beach, etc.  .

BI has been my favorite so far because I like that it's much more relaxed and low key, definitely get the 'island living' vibe there, but it also takes a lot of time to get to see some of the bigger things there, so 4 days may not be enough.
