Two-part honeymoon?

We want to take a good-length honeymoon, around 10 days. But, we don't want to be so bored and stuck on a beach for those 10 days so we're thinking of splitting up the trip, which would also help split up the flight time. We're from Jersey and have been to the Caribbean a few times so we def want to head over to the west coast for our honeymoon. We're thinking Cabo, Hawaii and/or Bora Bora. We love just sitting on a beach and swimming in crystal clear water (fiance loves snorkeling, too), but 10 days of it.. I dunno, haha!

Has anyone has done a two-part trip? I don't want to spend half my time traveling from spot to spot, but I don't want to be bored to death on a beach. Maybe Cabo/Bora Bora for beach, Hawaii for sight-seeing, or something like that.

Re: Two-part honeymoon?

  • What about 2 different islands in Hawaii?
  • We had a 2 part HM. We flew out the day after the wedding and spent a few days in Vegas, and then rented a car and drove to LA to fly to Fiji for another week. It was the best of both worlds since we got to celebrate in Vegas and then relax and be pampered in Fiji. We're also from the east coast, so it was great to break up the trip by stopping in Vegas.
  • Just keep in mind that you will lose a lot of time flying. From Jersey, there are very few (if any) direct flights to Cabo. So, if you wanted to go there, consider you are going to lose most of a day just getting there, even with the time change. Then, to get to Cabo to LAX to head to Bora Bora, you're going to lose a day or night, depending on what flight you take. You'll also lose a day on the way back just for travel. Hawaii and Bora Bora would not work together for just 10 days because there is only 1 flight per week from Hawaii to Papeete. I believe the flight is on a Saturday, but you will lose a day just getting out there. It's possible, but you won't be anywhere for very long. Another thing to keep in mind are flight costs. From NJ, flights to Bora Bora will run you around $300pp round trip to LAX, $1200pp from LAX to Tahiti, and then $500pp from Tahiti to Bora Bora. That's not including a diversion anywhere. A flight from EWR-Cabo-LAX-PPT-EWR would easily run $2Kpp not including the $500pp to get to Bora Bora from Papeete.

Personally, I would consider going somewhere that you can get cheaper flights on a stopover- LA, San Diego, Las Vegas, etc. Plus, those places are all super different from any tropical destination!

  • If you go to Bora Bora, you should make the other leg of your trip either LA or another island in French Polynesia. The trip to FP is not easy from the east coast - as PP have said, you would need to fly NJ-->LAX-->Papeete-->Bora Bora.

To split time in another part of the world like Cabo is going to feel rushed on 10 days.

I am doing a 13 day trip (visiting Moorea and Bora Bora), but the first 2 are flying from Boston-- />LAX-->Papeete-->Moorea, and the last 2 days are flying back from Bora Bora.

    Good luck!
  • We did, what ended up as a 3 part honeymoon.  We were traveling to French Polynesia, and had to go through LA from NYC.  So we stopped in LA for a day and a half prior to taking our flight to Tahiti.  Then we stayed in Moorea for 4 nights and then Bora Bora for 4 nights.  The islands were so different that we were able to do different excursions in each location to make it not seem like we were doing the same thing for 9 days.

If you're going to Bora Bora, I'd definitely recommend doing a different island for a few days.  That's not somewhere that you want to travel almost 20 hours to for only a few days (6 hour flight NJ-LA, 8 hour flight LA-Tahiti, plus layover time).
