I want to pick your brains!

FI and I have a budget of $5K for our honeymoon.  It must be no more than an 8 hr flight from Minneapolis, MN.  We're thinking beach-type HM, adults only (no KIDS!).  It doesn't have to be all inclusive but we do prefer hotels vs. apartment/condo rental.  No U.S. locations (we've considered Hawaii but it really seems less expensive to go elsewhere).  I've been to Mexico and Jamaica a few times already so those are out, too.

Where would you go with this budget and these specifications?  Where would our dollar stretch the furthest without sacrificing quality?  Can anyone recommend specific resorts?

Thanks, everyone!

  • How about the Dominican Republic? A friend of mine goes there at least once a year and never tires of it.

  • I was going to say the DR.  However, i've heard amazing things about Costa Rica.

  • Antigua, through Sandals (all inclusive) in the Honeymoon Garden of Eden, leaving from MN, there are 3 different flights going, but not more than 9 hours total of flight.  That was around $4k.  But you also want to purchase the "insurance" which is $200.  But if anything happens, you get the land fare refunded for whatever you have paid.  Check it out.
  • That Bahama's Atlantis resort looks pretty amazing.

  • FSIL and also FILs both went to Iberostar Grand Bavarao (adults only, all-inclusive) in P!nta Cana, Dominican Republic and loved it.  FILs went after FSIL HM'd there and raved about it.
  • Zoetry Agua   (inPunta Cana, Dominican Republic)
Zoetry is the higher end line of resorts in the same family as Dreams and Secrets.

They happen to be having a sale right now. Aside from the all-inclusive, you also get a bottle of chamagne and fresh fruit daily, a welcome bottle of rum, early check in/late check out, complimentary worldwide calls, concierge service, 1 20 minute massage per guest and horseback riding (once per stay)
$4900 includes 7 nights in a Taino Suite, airfare from MSP and round trip airport transfers.   (just an example of on deal)

I really love the Zoetry line.... maybe more than Sandals.  Check it out online.  For $5k you have a lot of options in the Caribbean.

  • atlantis is absolutely TEEMING with kids!

choose an adults only resort. that will guarantee no kids. otherwise-no guarantee.

  • We looked at a few resorts in Antigua - some of them allow kids, but only at certain times of year (the week of Christmas for example) and other than that are adult only. One that we really liked was Galley Bay. Can't remember the prices but it was around there b/c that is our budget too!
