Iceland

Anyone been to Iceland?  We are thinking of it for our honeymoon.  Not really sure why, looked at lots of tropical destinations and all looked absolutely gorgeous, but for some reason when we started talking about Iceland we both got all charged up and excited about it!
We'd be going in November, so it wiill be cooolllld, but that's ok...

We went for our honeymoon and it was AMAZING! Highly recommended.  We're not beach people or the type that like just sitting around relaxing on vacation, so it fit us perfectly.  We went in late September and it was chilly, but not awful.  I could go on and on about it and if you're interested in knowing more, feel free to e-mail me.  It's my screen name (at) gmail.com.  My husband put together a video montage of the trip which sums up the whole thing quite nicely:

  • My husband went for his bachelor party and loved  it! They went hiking on glaciers and swimming in the hot springs. He had an amazing time, you should do it!
  • My dad is from Iceland, I have family there and I've been several times. I really love it and I think it could make a great honeymoon, but there are definitely some things to consider. First of all, how long do you want your honeymoon to be? Because I think it would be hard to stay entertained for more than a week there. After a while it's just scenic waterfall after scenic waterfall, which is awesome but repetitive. Second, are you OK driving (most likely a manual transmission) in a foreign country? Because there is absolutely no other way to get around besides driving. Thirdly, it's quite expensive. And lastly, I would not go in Novemeber. Not because of temperature (it could be quite mild then) but because of daylight. I just got back from a trip to Europe and something I had never thought about was the lack of daylight in winter. I was in Italy and it was kind of a bummer that it got dark at 5 every night and it kind of cut into our sightseeing. Iceland in November would be much worse. It will never get fully light and you will probably only have about 6 hours of daylight.

That said, it's a great place and absolutely unlike anywhere else in the world. If you don't go in November you should definitely go sometime Smile
  • We did Iceland for part of our HM as well.  We were there in early September and it was awesome, albeit expensive, as PP said.

We were only in Reykjavik for 4 days, but we did a couple of really awesome tours.  We did snorkeling in Silfra + Golden Circle through dive.is, and it was AMAZING.  The other tour was Thorsmork Glacier Valley through Iceland Rovers.  This tour went down to the foot of the volcano that erupted in 2010, forded rivers, saw several waterfalls, etc.  Both were a bit pricey, but well worth it, IMO.  We also did the Blue Lagoon, and IMO, it was a total waste of money.

We stayed at Room With a View, which was really nice, and cheaper than a lot of places we checked out.  We had our own apartment with a full kitchen and sea view.  It was right in the middle of all the shopping, and a short walk to pretty much everything in Reykjavik.  I e-mailed them directly when they were planning asking for HM deals and they gave us a 15% discount.

  • I was there about 5 years ago in October for a music festival (Iceland Airwaves).  i agree with PP - the temps are mild / cool but the daylight hours are short.  We did not get a car. We did several day trips (horseback riding and the Blue Lagoon were my favorites) and we were picked up at our hotel.  Food and drink are very pricey.  I want to go back - I loved it.
