"Formal attire" for resort restaurants

What exactly is considered "formal attire" for a restaurant a beach resort? FI and I are getting married the end of April and then spending a week in Punta Cana. I'm just wondering what to pack for the restaurants that say formal attire is required. I don't know if he should pack a suit jacket or what?

Re: "Formal attire" for resort restaurants

  • At the resort we stayed at in Punta Cana (The Excellence), the dress code varied depending on the restaurant.  Some outdoor restaurants didn't have much of a dress code, but other indoor restaurants requried "formal" attire. I wore dresses (just simple sundresses) to dinner each night.  When we ate at the formal restaurants, my H wore khaki pants and a polo shirt.  We did see men who were wearing shorts and sandals try to go to the formal restaurants, and they were asked to change and not allowed in.  So, I don't think a suit jacket is necessary, but make sure that your H packs some khaki pants and nice shirts.  I would check your resort's website for specific attire guidelines.
  • did you look at the resort's website for specifics?

  • agree with PP. Check out the resort website. In addition to the above, they usually also require close-toed shoes for men.

  • Some resorts require men to wear pants. That could be jeans or khaki's. Ladies can get away with a lot more usually. Most of the time a nice summer dress is perfect. I have never heard of a resort actually requiring black tie or even business type attire for formal though. It is mostly just "Not Beach Clothes".

  • I think the resorts are pretty laid back.  My husband does sandals, khakis and polo shirts.  We've never been turned away.
