Cake Tasting Update/ Reviews

Ok so as most of you saw in my post from this morning, we went to Eddas and Divine Delicacies for our cake tastings today.Let me preface by saying I'm NOT a cake person. I never eat the cake at weddings, I'm not a huge fan of sweets in general so I didn't think I'd really care what the cake tasted like but I was wrong. I want yummy cake for my wedding. Ha.So... here's my feedback/ reviews from today's experience. Eddas: We started there and I have to say... overall we were  disappointed in the taste of the cakes we tried. We tried a bunch of flavors.... Vanilla Rum, Chocolate, Lemon, Marble, Orange, Pina Colada, Red Velvet and Guava. The Red Velvet and Guava were both upgrades that would have cost us more but we didn't like either of them. I was especially disappoitned in the red velvet since that was what we were hoping to chose (and possibly pay more for) but it was completely tasteless and then the frosting was just TOO rich and TOO Sweet. The Guava just wasn't our thing. The Orange and Pina Colada tasted GROSS to me. We also Didn't really care for the marble one.Matt really liked the Lemon and I really liked the Vanilla Rum, and we both agreed the Chocolate was pretty good so if we WERE to go with Eddas, those would be the flavors we would chose but honestly,  I wouldn't say I was crazy about them AT ALL. I wouldn't like, LOOK FORWARD to eating that cake, it was more like those were the best of the options if we were FORCED to chose. As for the design, we spoke with a lady there named Esther who we liked a lot b/c she really seemed to get the vision and what we wanted for the cake so I honestly TRUST them to do a good job w/ the design which is definitely a good thing. Because of that I'd normally be tempted to book Eddas but I'm not sure if I can get over the taste of those cakes and get on board with them. They just weren't that good.Divine Delicacies: We went there next and we tried a bunch of flavors there. The cakes here were MUCH better tasting in my opinion. Their red velvet was really really good, we really liked the  marble cake, and we also really liked the Key Lime flavor. Those would be the ones we'd chose if we went with them.We were disappointed in the  Godiva Chocolate one  it tasted kind of dry and bland. The Lemon cake was good but not amazing. The Vanilla was just alright.  But on the whole, these cakes tasted a lot better. So I THOUGHT we'd be good BUT...The issue is how much they wanted to charge us to upgrade. First they charge upgrades for the Red Velvet and the Key Lime flavors... ok fine, BUT then they are charging almost $200 to do a custom design for us (i'm not sure if Eddas was charging for the custom design too) Our "custom" design couldn't be more simple if it tried. It's basically our invitation design. Nothing crazy. Also we saw them bring out a cake for a customer, it was probably a shower cake or engagement party cake and it honestly looked pretty shoddy and the customer didn't seem happy so Matt was worried about whether or not they'd be able to execute our "custom" design, even though it's fairly simple. So we left there and thought about it.Either we get a pretty cake from Eddas that tastes just ok, or a yummy cake from DD that might come out looking funky and will cost a lot in upgrates... So in summary, we're not sure what to do. We should have done a tasting with Ana Paz but I originally said no b/c I didn't like the cakes I tasted of hers a bridal show. Now I think since we were already down there, we may as well have gone. Oh well. I think I want to  talk to the coordinator at the Epic about possibly getting a credit for our cake and going to an outside vendor like Eddible Creations or We take the cake or something. (assuming we like their cakes better)We should have gone to try Ana Paz too but we didn't. I hadn't liked the samples of hers at a bridal show so that's why I ruled her out but we MAY give her a try since we're not sure about these other companies.I am definitely bummed but what can you do?Sigh... Such a waste of calories ;)

Hey babes... Don't get your hopes up :) I'll bake your cake!!!! Hehe. You shouldn't have to settle. It's your day and you should have both. If I was in your situation, I'd ask the Epic about the credit for the cake. Then go somewhere where you will get both things you are looking for. Do NOT settle. Is Ana Paz on your vendor list?? You could go try her just once more. Who knows? Maybe those sample from the bridal show just didn't travel well that day. You will find your cake!!!!!!

Hey Tess, yeah Ana Paz is the other company we can chose from. We did try and go there but they wouldn't see us without an appointment. So whatever... I MAY give her another try but I tried to today and they gave me the brush off when I was literally OUTSIDE their door so whatever... I hope that if I can get a decent credit from the Epic and don't get charged an insane cutting fee, then I might go outside.I mean, the 3 flavors we DID like from Eddas weren't bad, so if we had to go with them we would but I'm just not sure.

Jamie, I am sorry to hear that your cake tasting was not what you expected. However, I know that you will find the cake that you love. In case you are able to go elsewhere for your cake, I totally recommend We Take the Cake.

I'm dissapointed to hear about Edda's. Her cakes come with our catering package...
  • edited December 2011
Are you going to have any other desserts besides the cake?? Also, in the event that you can't find a cake you love... what about doing a mock up wedding cake for people to see...then getting sheet cakes from somewhere like Publix to serve?? That's like worst.case.scenario, though....

Tess, we ARE going to do a dessert bar. Originally all we were going to have was Cake but now we have planned a dessert bar so that helps...If we HAVE to go with Eddas we will but I want to explore some other options!

Having a dessert bar will help take the stress of the cake lots! You'll find the perfect cake, Jaims :) It'll all work out! xoxo

Aw! Sorry they were mediocre. It's okay - you should definitely LOVE them. Try and do Ana Paz. They may blow you away. If not, get a credit and go elsewhere...somewhere you know is great like that Edible Creations. I think Alissa is always raving about them. You're making me nervous about Ana Paz b/c we don't have time to do much tasting and I think my venue only provides an Ana Paz cake. I hope it's good!

Sorry to hear it was such a bummer. We have the option of those three cake places with our package too and we chose DD. I do not like Edda's at all, its nothing personal about them, but I think their cakes are not that great and the icing is way way too sweet. We had their cake for our engagement party and it was pretty but not worth what we paid for it. As for DD, I didn't know that the red velvet was an upgrade---will have to check with them on our package at Thanksgiving as that is what we are picking. We wanted a different design at the time we met with them and they wanted to charge me an upgrade fee too and it's something soooo simple so I couldn't understand that. I have heard wonderful things about their design execution on wedding cakes though so I feel pretty confident that they will come through, but taste is way more important to me than looks. Good luck and def. meet with Ana Paz. I almost went with her but it was going to cost too much for the upgrades.

Alissa raves about We Take the Cake and Danielle Raves about Eddible Creations!Shetmo and Millenia, don't stress... I hear mixed things about Ana and Edda all the time so take my reviews with a grain of salt. It could just be my experience... but unfortunately, that's what I am going to go off of for now.

Ohhh NO! I can't believe that the Godiva Chocolate Cake didn't taste right...I loved it when we went.I'm sorry. You'll find the perfect cake vendor...knottie vibes!

I hope everything works out for you! I am sure that you will find something that is just right. Now you got me thinking though becasue my venue says it comes with a wedding cake but it doesnt say from where..

We had the same experience at Eddas!! Decent (IF we had to settle....) with expensive upgrades and poor customer service (we were in the Pembroke Pines location).I TOTALLY 100% recommend going to Edible Creations - Lily will treat you like a queen and her cakes are SO SO SO YUMMY.good luck lover!!!!!!! mmm i want cake.

I completely understand that you want the whole package, looks and taste. I would too. Better luck next time though, I'm sure you'll find the perfect cake!

Michelle, we just might have different tastes, you know?I know that happens when it comes to food. I liked the chocolate cake at Eddas.Matt and I were just talking about it and Eddas really wasn't that bad if we were to go w/ the flavors we DID like. It was just that the ones we didn't like were so bad it stuck out.. and the red velvet was SOOO disappointing. We'll see what my coordinator at the Epic says about my options on Monday and take it from there...

Oh Jaime I was hoping they would blow you away. I hope you choose We Take the Cake(my mom loves them), or  Elegant Temptations( I plan on using Rosie), everyone says her cakes are awesome!!!! You will find the best cake for your guests:)

If I could go back and do it again, I would have argued with my venue to get the credit and go to another baker (hell, Publix is better than Eddas).   Now that I have been to several weddings and tasted really good wedding cake, I am embarrassed at how bad ours was.  I suggest you get the credit.

I'm so sorry you had a dissappointing experience. I'm sure you will be able to work something out and have a cake that you love! My venue also has a couple of cake vendors, and I know DD is one of them. Before I signed the contract with the venue, I told them I wanted the credit for the cake, because I wasn't going to go with any of their vendors. They gave me the credit, and aren't even charging me a cake cutting fee, so I'm thrilled about that. GL! Knottie vibes your way!

Hey Foxy, DO NOT SETTLE!!! I really hope everything works out with the credit. Try Edible Creations. Lily is an absolute sweetheart and her cakes are beyond delicious. The cake at my wedding was just as yummy and moist as it was at the tasting and guests could not stop raving about how beautiful it was. Plus, I loved that she personally delivered the cake herself and stuck around until I arrived to the venue just so she could see my reaction! She really cares about her customers and that's a HUGE plus in my book. Good luck and keep us posted :)

wow - i'd be disappointed to from the sounds of it. I don't know really anything about the So FL cake vendors, so I'm not really much help. At the WPB bridal show though, I met a guy from A Piece of Cake by Elena, and his cake tasted really awesome at the show, and we met with him the next day and tasted his butter rum and some chocolate something and they were both awesome, and we're doing a full tasting in january. I know their main store is somewhere in Miami I think, so maybe that's worth looking into if you can get the credit from your venue to go to an outside cake vendor. Either way, good luck, and don't settle, i'm sure you'll find something amazing. :) (And if it were me, I'd rather get the awesome looking over awesome tasting.)

Jaime..I am so sorry that the cake tasting didn't go as expected.. :o(  I loved DD when I went and I thought they were also pricy, but I loved how the sample tasted both time I went. Don't settle, hopefully your venue gives you credit and you can check out other cake vendors. Sending you knottie vibes!!!!

Hey girl, so sorry it didn't go well. When I could eat cake, I never liked Edda's and I AM a cake eater (or was). So much, that I would pass their samples at shows. Last week I went to Ana Paz and met with Ana herself at the Doral location and FI loved her samples. Her upgrade fee was also reasonable. However, if you can get a credit, I would go elsewhere and here's why. All 3 of those vendors do production style cakes, meaning they produce alot of cakes every week at a fast pace. The result is mixed results. Sometimes the cakes will be beautiful and taste great, other times there are cracks in the fondant (a common complaint) or the cake is stale and dry. Personally for me, I wouldn't want to take the risk. I only considered Ana Paz because she does gluten free cakes, but in the end I am going with Elegant Tempations. My suggestion is to select a vendor who is not on a lot of hotel packages. There are some great ones out there, you've already named a few. When I did my engagement party cake, that's what I did and it was amazing and cheaper than any of the traditional cake vendors.Good Luck...knottie vibes

Jaime - First off you always have the most detailed reviews. Sorry to hear that it wasn't the best experience. You have two really great alternatives. If you need a third, my cake vendor, Mayu Cakes, was my favorite vendor.

i AGREE W/ YOU ABOUT ANA PAZ...we tasted her cakes and they tasted too much like Flour and she wasnt the most pleasant woman either. You should try Susie's Scrumptous Sweets in Tamarac/Sunrise 954.476.0476  Theyre designs are flawless ..TRY THE COCONUT ...if we go with them we're going with their Butter Rum its soo moist and tastes expensive :)
