Drinks!

So FI and I arent wine drinkers. He's more beer, Im more margaritas. Our venue only allows beer, wine and champagne. We've tried a few wines that were suggested online, we thought they were disgusting. Since we're not into it, we were hoping to find out what brands are generally considered crowd pleasers that wouldnt break the bank. Any suggestions?
Also Im looking for drink recipes that will give off the effect of a mixed drink with the type of alcohol being wine or champagne.

Re: Drinks!

  • With wine you could have sangria, or also mix red wine with tonic water and it makes a great fizzy drink.Champagne you could mix with orange juice for mimosas or peach juice and tonic water for bellinis.
I think I don't like the same types of wine everyone does, so you should go by the usuals that people are expectig: cabernet and merlot for red and pinot for white......HTH!
  • Try Barefoot wine. They have a good selection and a very inexpensive. FI and I really like that brand.

Reisling is actually a type of white wine. However, both Beringer and Barefoot offer nice wines. Yellow Tail has some great notes in their vintages as well.
Specific wines that would cover a mix of palates would be the following reds: merlot, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and/or pinot noir; and the following whites: chardonnay, pinot grigio, reisling and/or sauvignon blanc.
When you go out to dinner, try wines with your meal, your FI orders a red or white, you order the opposite and try a few different wines over the course of several meals. My FI discovered he loves the sweetness of moscato when we were having dinner at Olive Garden one day. That is where I discovered my love of Sutter Home White Zinfandel.
Also, consider what you are serving as your meal. Fish pairs better with whites, while beef is better with reds. Chicken and pork depend on the flavors as to whether a white or red is a better choice. Rose wines are not as common, but tend to suit surf 'n turf very well.
If you find a wine you both kind of like, then try a couple brands of that wine. Say you both really enjoy pinot noir, try it in Yellow Tail, Cavit, Barefoot, etc. until you find a couple wines you both like to use for the wedding. Or at the very least, a couple of reds and whites you can live with for the wedding.
I also second PPs in mixing a sparkling wine with a fruit juice- prosecco (basically Italian champagne) and grapefruit juice is really lovely. Play around until you find a combo you will be comfortable having at your wedding and you know will satisfy your guests as well. HTH!
