XP: Can i Vent?

I am really annoyed by some people's comments sometimes. My ceremony (Church) and reception are roughly 30 minutes apart. We live in a large city where everything is spread out. A few people have made little remarks regarding the distance between the two is too far apart. "Don't be surprised if some people skip the ceremony!"

Now here I am, I just received an invitation from a friend I deeply care for and I'm willing to drive 3 hours to the next city over, to attend a Sunday wedding and drive home that same night in order to go to work the next day.

I guess I just don't understand people sometimes. Weddings is the one time you are given plenty of time to make the arrangements you need. Or if you can't come than that is fine but don't complain about silly stuff like driving 30 minutes. When I know you do it all the time if you live in the suburbs and going Downtown for a night out.

  • People are always going to find something to complain about. :(
  • That's ridiculous! A 30 minute drive from the ceremony to the reception is not bad at all, and about average I would say, even around here which isn't a super huge city. Just keep your cool if people give you a hard time about it and try to change the subject in a discreet way. Hopefully people will realize that they're being rude and you don't want to talk about it with them.

  • a 30 minute drive isn't all that bad. Just try to ignore the comments from the peanut gallery. I know harder than it seems...

  • I agree, 30 mins is not a lot. Ours is a 15 minute drive, but could be longer if there is traffic. Just make sure ppl know the way and I'm sure all will be fine!

  • Our ceremony and reception are 23 miles apart. This could be an easy or hard drive, depending on the amount of traffic. The ceremony is in the city, then the reception is outside the city in the suburbs, so hopefully the traffic coming out of the city won't be too bad. To alleviate the driving issue and because 90% of our guests are OOT (and won't have a car), we're providing transportation from ceremony to reception and back to the city (hotels are all in the city).

HOWEVER, this is by NO MEANS REQUIRED, and anyone who is complaining about it is just looking for something to complain about. Yes, it would be easier for everyone involved if things were all in the same exact location. But life isn't always easy. :)  People who seriously have an issue with it won't come. It's not the end of the world.

30 min. is good timing, some ppl just don't have anything better to do with their time but complain.  Don't listen to them and don't let them bring you down Smile
  • as others said...people are always going to find something to complain about. i think we are all starting to notice this already now that guests are starting to make plans :)

try to ignore them. 30 minutes is totally reasonable and anyone who complains is just being a weenie head.
  • I hate when people say "Oh July??? It's going to be so hot!" Duh, we are in Texas... I know how hot it will be. That's why everything is indoors and at night. Half the people that have said that are people from my work, which we aren't inviting, so I guess they won't have to worry about the heat :]

    Hey there fellow Texan!

Yes, I've heard that too. What annoys me most are the people complaining are the same people that go out all the time, have BBQs in the middle of July, etc...they don't complain then.

Thanks ladies. I will keep in mind that I can't please everyone.

  • I'm in the same boat and have also received those comments... mostly from family members that have a problem with keeping their opinions to themselves. hahaha

I did the best I could with getting a venue in our price range that was as close as possible to our church... if people don't want to make the trip for both... oh well!

I'm also dealing with the infamous church time gap (2+ hours) between ceremony and reception, and am just waiting to here the complaints about that.  Nothing I can do about that, either, so I'm giving them ideas of places to grab a bite or a drink after the ceremony.

There's only so much you can do, ya know?

Us, too. Ceremony at 3 (Catholic, like yours, so they wouldn't let us do any later than that, unfortunately) then reception at 6. I'm hoping word spreads to congregate at the hotel where the buses will pick people up (if I state something about it, I'm worried they'll think we're picking up the tab, which we are not).

  • A half hour is nothing...really.  And exactly like you said!  People who live in the suburbs have to drive all the time when they want to get anywhere.  The people that really matter will make it to both just the way you are planning to be there for your friend's wedding.

  • Like PPs said, there will be someone complaining about something!!! Just let it go- they'll live. You can't really please everybody, right??? :)
