How much of a pain is it to change your name?

I'm still debating whether I want to or not. So I thought I ask how much of a hassle it would be from Knotties in the Know!

Re: How much of a pain is it to change your name?

  • I was debating it too, but the FI is pretty much set in me doing it. It pains me to leave my name behind, but I'm thinking in the future I want to have the same last name as my kids.
That said, it is still a pain. I mean, Social Security, License, Passport, argh!!! I told him he'll be coming with me to every single office!

    Good luck!

As long as you have your proper paperwork marriage license and valid government ID with maiden name the hardest part is the wait to speak with someone To change it.
  • I always wondered this as well. I have never realized how much a last name means to me until recently when we talked about it. My dad passed away when I was 13, I was a total daddy's girl too. Its me and my youger two sisters, no boys to carry on the name....ugh it sucks!
    Maybe a hyphened name?
I am looking forward to readin posts on this as well to get info. on it.

  • i have felt the same way, i want to change my name but it's a little bit of an identity thing. but a suggestion that i could make and something i'm considering is keeping my last name as part of my middle name, either dropping my middle name all together and replacing it w/ my maiden name or just adding it. so it would really only be on official docs but still apart of me. hyphens are a pain sometimes...
  • I think it sounds like a huge pain! Having to change everything from ids to bank accounts and checks and social security and passports and and any professional licenses. Plus the fees for all of it. No thanks! I also just have zero desire to change it. It's so much of my identity I could just image being someone else. I'm still me after the wedding just married me.

  • I hope it is not too much of a disaster if i just hyphenate mine!!  I wouild never drop my maiden last name I am an only child. I am completely attached to me name!! I love it!!!

  • A good article I found... some food for thought:

I'm hyphenating my name b/c I don't want to lose my connections in my field (it's a very small, word of mouth community). In a few years I'm gonna go all the way to the "dark side." :)

  • I have no emotional attachment to my last name since it is a reminder of my absent biological father. My younger brother can pass on the last name and my fiance's is actually pretty awesome, so for me, the choice was an easy one.
  • What you need is Form 1982.A that can be physically obtainable at any Florida Courthouse or obatined online at howtochangeyourname.com/florida. The form must be filed after you have received your marriage license/certficate and the process takes about 6-8 weeks depending upon the judge asking you to come in for a hearing (very rare with marriage though).
