Beachy venue without a beachy theme?

We picked a venue in an area that we love, also because its where he proposed. It's in Yorktown, VA which is a pretty historical area, but the building overlooks the river and beach. While I love the location, I do not love the idea of a beach themed wedding/reception. We were going over the idea of having a Victorian/Corpse Bride theme which we would do black and white with touches of blues and butterflies from the movie. But the more we think about it, the more its bothering me that it doesn't really fit the "atmosphere" of the location. Our ceremony will be outdoors at sunset, and there will be a full moon that night. What can we do that ties in all of that of the atmospher and still add a bit of "darkness/goth" touches that I love? I really want my dress to flow with the rest of the feel of the wedding too. PLEASE dont respond with the "you dont need a theme cuz they're stupid" THANKS!!!
Not the traditional bride...

Re: Beachy venue without a beachy theme?

  • I'm having a black and red music themed wedding, and our venue has gold walls and gold decor. I don't think the venue has to dictate the theme at all, do whatever you want and I'm sure it will be gorgeous!
  • when I read this I thought of the 90's version of dark shadows, all the yummy gothic glamour the widows walks the weird sweepy music. ok anyway to translate that into something you can use
maybe do a dark beach theme, think the fantasy scene in sweeny todd?
try maybe dark fishnet overlays on tables, center peices with driftwood and deep colored flowers, have a corpse bride cake, and even little black wrought iron lanterns that conjure up the idea of lighthouses.

A beach isn't so beachy at night. They're really rather spooky and forlorn. Perhaps even....eldritch? When I think historical northeastern waterfront, I think Lovecraft!

The area's also fairly well-known for ghosts and pirate-hangings, if more Williamsburg than Yorktown. Tell a few ghost stories at the rehearsal dinner, decorate with some skeletal drift wood/branches and wedding guests will look at the horizon more suspiciously.
