Bands-is this normal?

So my fiancé and I are band shopping. I've posted on here a few times about this. We would like to audition the bands (we are spending a lot of money on them), but we have been told by a few of them now that we can only listen to their demos online and that we can't see them live as they only do private events. Now, this is understandable (I wouldn't want just ANYONE hanging out at my wedding) so i asked for them to film a rehearsal (if they're in SB where our wedding will be) or to have us sit in on a rehearsal (I'm a musician myself). They were totally taken aback that we would ask such a thing and told us that no one has ever asked that before and the answer is no. Does this seem odd to anyone? Has anyone had this experience before?

Thanks!

I had a DJ so I'm not too sure about what's normal but I would think that they would be accommodating if they want a gig.  It's not like you're asking them to play just for you.  They would have to rehearse anyway, right?

I would definitely move to another band if they told me that. Like jagore said - they want a gig, right? Someone will be willing to accommodate you. And they should!

Actually, the bands don't really rehearse together. Many of them have day jobs doing studio work, so they already know the music, it's just in their repetoire and they play with a lot of people all the time and they just *get* it together.

We used City Connection (http://cityconnectionent.com/), specifically Sharky & The Babes. They were great and the owner of the company was actually our MC for the night. We never saw them live, but we watched quite a few of their demos and didn't really have a problem booking without seeing them live. I guess you can hit up YouTube and see if anyone's posted stuff with the bands you are looking at.

To second penaltyshot, I doubt the band you're hiring will rehearse together if they're professional musicians.  I used to sing for these sorts of things, and I don't think I've ever rehearsed with a whole band prior to a gig.

Also, usually the "band" isn't always the same people.  It's generally one (maybe two) people who then hire other musicians to come play with them depending on who's available.  I would just go with someone whose style you like, and then ask around (or look for online reviews) about their reputation.  If they are known for being professional and high-quality, and you like the style, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

We have been lucky that our bands allow us to stop by their events for audition.  I mean, they have it in their contracts where it would be okay for potential clients to stop by...as long as we are being polite, discrete and dressed appropriately.

I found our band using gigmaster.com

    good luck1
