Cake Experience/Dilemma

So the much dread cake tasting happened this weekend...I must say I expected a stab to the heart but it was only a nick Wink SORTA!

So the Odyssey offers 2 BAKERS which if you pick your cake from these 2 bakers the cutting fee is waved and delivery & set-up as well. So FI and I thought it would be budget  friendly to do so.

1st BAKER IN WOODLAND HILLS:
We went in VERY FRIENDLY!!!! Offered us to drink immediately...and since I had emailed her pics of multiple Alice in Wonderland Cake Designs she knew exactly what we wanted. She told me with all the details and a 3 tier cake would run about $6 a slice which the grand total would be $522 out the door and thats  with the credit from the Odyssey. Which I thought wasn't too bad...they had really nice cakes.

The cake was SUPER yummy! FI and I thought it was super moist and the icings were delicious. She explained because of the cake we want we HAVE to have fondant no if ands or buts and NO FRESH FRUIT!!!! Which we were disappointed at first, and without hesitation she brought out fondant and strawberry mousse filling cake...OMG soooo good! It almost tasted like fresh strawberries...super yummy! And the fondant was delicious and she explained everything to me never once seemed irritated by any questions we had...told us to look at other bakers and to let her know if she could provide any services. She was nice and the cake seemed great.

Though I never saw a hesitation in her about the intricate design we want for the Alice cake,  in her shop I did NOT see any models or past cakes similar to what we want, I think that it may not be their specialty. She assured us multiple times what she could do it and not to worry about, and the cakes were DELICIOUS!

2nd Baker in Sherman Oaks:
How to even start...this place is known for their DESIGNS. I  mean in their front window they have castle shaped, hamburgers with fries, tipsy turvy cakes, radios, purses I mean could go on and on about how many crazy designs they had.

Walked in asked what we wanted showed him all my pics he seemed confused but grasped concept. That took like 15 mins to explain and he offered same sizes like the 1st baker and  I asked the price he said let me punch in #'s & he walked away brought like 10 pieces of cake to try and while we tried them he punched #'s.

FI and I did NOT care for any of the cakes.  I mean they were ok, edible but just ok. Not our favorite I would say. FI seemed so disgusted.  After that he came back with his #'s basically its $11 a slice so the total was like $880 and that was with the credit from the Odyssey.  Ok this is were it all gets bizarre for us...he noticed we only ate the chocolate cake and we seemed very unsure when he asked us what cake flavor we wanted in the cake. Then went to state that all that mattered was the design because pictures last forever and well if people don't like the cake they could just throw it away. (Now $ doesn't grow on trees we all know that) So what went through my mind was like "so you think your cakes taste like s*@t! too" then started asking us were we work and if they were hiring...and very persistent at it. Then asked when we could put $ down cux he would hold the price for us only for a week. After that he would not guarantee the price. Then he started asking which places the Odyssey had sent us to and how much they were charging us for the same cake and if we liked how they tasted and how many flavors we tasted. Girls it was awkward!!! We said our good byes and laughed as we walked to the car.

So here is my dilemma...do we go to a baker who was very polite and the cakes were GREAT and they seemed confident they could do the Alice in Wonderland Cake?

OR

Do we go with a baker who is known for their designs and I would not doubt he could create what we want but had horrible cake, weird man...and maybe be potentially be looking for work somewhere else.

Girls, What to do?

Sorry so long!

Also we could NOT go with the 2 bakers, but we add a cutting fee from the Odyssey and a delivery and set-up fee from whatever baker we chose.

I'm also positive if we do that...this cake will cost over $1000 easily!!!!!

This is an easy....go with the nice cake person that cost less, where the cakes taste great.  Even if the design only gets a B- instead of an A+, I would say it is worth it.  I have been to too many weddings where the cake tastes like S#$T!  Give your guests a sweet, delicious treat!

I agree with lala.  I would much prefer to go with the better tasting (and not so intrusive) first baker.

I would go with the first person. I am sure they know what they are doing. Ask them if they have any pictures they can e-mail you with similar style that you want. Design is important but taste is important too. guest will remember taste before they remember look if you ask me.

Go for the 1st baker hands down.  Why have a beautiful cake that doesn't taste good? Also the first one seemed to care about your interests.

I would go with the first bakery.  Maybe she just hasn't had a client ask for a cake similar to yours but knows that she can do it.  I think that if she couldn't do it she would have tried to convince you to change your vision a little bit, and since she didn't do that she probably can pull it off.  Also I always say people don't really remember the good about the wedding if there is one bad thing like the cake was horrible, I'm sure your guests will appreciate having a good tasting cake. go with the nice cake person that cost less, where the cakes taste great :) besides if baker #2 is looking for a job he might not be there to design the cake and know all the details you want... insetad it will probably some newbie?!

I agree with everyone else, go with the first baker.  If they look confident in making your dream cake come true, then you should trust them.  I know you migh tfeel scared to see something you didnt vision but sometimes even the ones who you think will do a great job fall apart...and i mean baker #2 is weird already and sounds like drama. GL I hope you make the best dicision.

Everyone will remember how the cake tasted in comparison to how perfect it is. I'd go with choice number 1. The vendor was friendly and the cake tasted delish, plus the rates were okay. No one else will know if the design is not exactly what you wanted. Sounds like you have a winner!
