Live Band, Latin music & mariachi's

Hello,

I would like to have live music at my reception.

How much does a band run? Do you suggest a DJ for half the night and then a live band?

I would do half and half.  Best thing to do is ask around the Latino community.  Sometimes the musicians in church will do it for a very reasonable price

I was thinking of using a band I saw at a birthday party. They played everything from standards up to 80's music. They also were able to play some old spanish music and salsa.  I just don't know how much a band would run. I think entertainment is the most important piece of a reception, at least it is for me.  Im thinking that the bulk of my expense will go to this and as soon as I know how much entertainment will be then I can figure out how much to spend on everything else?????

I agree, entertainment can make or break your wedding reception.  If you can afford the band, go for it.  Last I heard, bands were charging about $300 per person for a wedding.  Some bands charge for the band, not per person.

The one drawback to the band (in my opinion) is that they seldom MC the event.  Even if they do, they don't do a very good job, so plan on having a day/of coordinator or a third party MC who can keep things moving.

On a more personal note, I have worked weddings where the DJ and band took turns.. and the DJ could also MC and take care of your special dances, cake cutting, etc., while the band takes a break.
