I am a photographer who has been shooting for a while, but am now looking to take it more seriously. I am getting work now by word of mouth and am looking to expand. I don't know what your rates are, but in a nut shell - I am a wedding photographer who doesn't really have set prices. I understand that the economy is bad and some brides can't pay for the photographer they really want. What I do is ask what their budget is and try to work something out that works for all parties!
