Mexican Traditions?!?!

Well...my FI is Mexican/Catholic and I am White/Methodist. We were planning on incorporating a few Mexican tradtions into our cermony (13 gold coins & lazzo) but my FI's mother just told us that we can't do those things since our wedding will not be in a church. Are there any other Mexican wedding traditions that could be done in an outdoor ceremony?

We are doing the arras (coins) and not getting married in a church. The officiant is still going to read a passage from bible and do the vows and arras.

Other mexican traditions can be: dollar dance, vibora de la mar (Sea snake) dance, see this video if you haven't seen one in person (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgEuL-bZURk) the lines are done this way: female line, male line, they start off slow, holding hands in line and then as music goes faster, they run around faster, sometimes the last person in line flies off which is the fun part.....

My parents had a double wedding and during the vibora de la mar, my aunt (the other bride) was knocked off her chair by the crazed people running around!  HILARIOUS!  I mean, it wouldn't be funny to her, but I picture it in my head and it's funny!  ...

Anyway, you can totally do the arras and the lazo even if you're not marrying in a church.  Just ask the officiant to talk about the significance of that and include it in your ceremony.  We're not Catholic, but we're going to do the arraas & laso anyway.

You can also carry azares in your bouquet or something like that.

The dollar dance & bouquet/garter toss (vibora de la mar) is totally a MX thing!  Do it!  And don't forget to serve the MX wedding cookies

We are including a lot of Mexican music, as well as maracas for our send off and cascarones during the reception.  We are having custom mosaic tile work, so you can include elements that you like in your decor if you want. 

I would love to have Mariachi!!  But, around here you can't find many groups and they are really high priced, but I would think it would be easier in Florida.

AmandaG225 a good friend of mine who's Guatemalan Catholic married her soulmate two years ago (he's Indian), they had a non-denominational ceremony that included customs from both traditions.  She used the arras and the lazo.  I don't think you need to be in the church to use these traditions, you can modify any tradition to fit who you are as a couple. I'm about to get married we're both mexican/catholic, and i've butted heads with mom regards symbolism. but as long as you explain to them what it means to you to incorporate these traditions, i'm sure you'll be fine.   Ps- a mariachi during a ceremony is absolutely breathtaking!

I don't think the Lazo and Arras are exclusively Catholic...it just seems that way since most hispanics are Catholic. You can use them.

We're having a Mariachi band at our reception (during dinner only) and having the rehersal dinner at a Mexican restaurant.
