Asha vs. Moissanite?

My guy and I have been talking about getting an engagement ring with a diamond simulant so that we can get a bigger, more extravagant stone that's still within our budget. I've been reading about moissante and Asha diamonds, and I was wondering if anyone knows which one is better? I've heard that moissanite can have a greenish tint in sunlight, but that Asha is just basically CZ.

Does anyone on here have an Asha or moissanite ring? Does the moissanite really look greenish? Please post pictures if you have them so I can see!

Re: Asha vs. Moissanite?

  • Personally, I would choose moissanite if you don't want a "real" diamond ring.  Moissanite isn't "pretending" to be a diamond, it is a different compound all together (a mineral, silicon carbide), and is quite pretty in itself.  Silicon carbide is naturally occuring, although it can also be manufactured in a lab.

Asha diamonds are made of carbon (same as "real" diamonds) at the surface of the stone, not all throughout.  Completely man-made.

Asha diamonds are not the same as CZ, which are a different mineral altogether (zirconium dioxide).

Please see my post (click). This (CLICK) is a forum that women (and some men) post about various types of engagement ring choices. I have found that discussion board extremely helpful in my quest to find my perfect ring.

I, personally, like Asha better. I think that it looks more "diamond-like". Moissanite has double refraction (idk if I'm saying that right), so it's easier to tell that it's not a diamond.

Plus, asha is a bit cheaper that moissanite (in the settings that I'm considering).

Maybe order a loose stone in moissanite and asha then determine which you like best.

When I get my ring in, I plan to post it with a review of my experience. I have nothing but positive things to say about ashadiamonds.com and moissaniteco.com
I looked at betterthanadiamond.com but I found them to be a little more expensive than ashadiamonds.com and they didn't have as large of a selection.

    Good luck!
  • I have a moissanite ring and I love it.

From what I understand Asha is pretty much a CZ with a diamond coating to improve durability. Moissanite on the other hand is an actual gem stone.

Moissanite is not a diamond wannabe bit, substitute or stimulant it is its own gem stone. Moissanite is also the second hardest gem stone in the world behind only a diamond so it has great durability. Moissanite has more fire and brillance than a diamond but I can not speak on who Asha compares to a diamond in the respect.

From the moissanite that I have seen it seems to be pretty rare to get a moissanite that has color to it now in days. The shape that is the whitest is the round brillant and as you get more into the fancy shapes such as heart and pear you are more likely to see some color. Size also plays a factor. If you get a moissanite over 1.5 ct equivlant you are more likely to see some color to it. Moissaniteco has enhanced stones that you can purcahse which go through an extra process to make the stones whiter. They are about $100 more a ct. I have a 1.5 cushion cut moissanite stone and my stone is white and with no hint of green.

All in all I chose moissanite because I wanted moissanite, I did not want a diamond. I like the look of moissanite more than diamonds. What ever you choose please do not pass it off as a diamond. No matter what a stone can only be a "fake" diamond if you pass it off as a diamond. Be proud of your ring for what it is.

  • I have a moissanite E-ring.  Everything PP's said is correct, so no need to reiterate.
Mine is a 1.2 ct triangle cut.  The stone was purchased separately and cost us $600.  A comparable size/cut diamond was quoted to me $3500.

  • The customer service with Asha is extremely poor.  I have a 1.5 carat Emerald Cut Asha Diamond that is supposed to be in 14k white gold.  Basically what I recieved is yellow gold coated in Rhodium.  After 3 months of wearing this ring, it now has a yellowish tint.  The stone itself is very sparkly and "real" looking.  I love the stone but I am very disappointed in the gold. When ordering this ring my fiance was never told of the possibility that it would need to be "re dipped" as they say.  I am certain they did not tell him it would turn within the first few months.

He contacted them only to get really rude email replies saying everyone knows this is what white gold is.  I say that is a lie.  My mother has had a white gold ring for 52 years and it is still white.  Asha Diamonds has cheap (or poor quality) methods for producing their white gold ring.  If you want an asha diamond- buy the loos stone and get your setting elsewhere.  Or be smart and do not do business with them!
